Just in case you are wondering how much it would cost to buyout Clarkson

Saw it on capgeek.  Theres really only 1 or 2 significant years.  The rest are less than $2M or so.

I'd have bought him out yesterday.

There's limits to when these buyouts can occur, right?  We can't just buy him out now?  Because if we can, and I was in charge, I'd do it...

Right, there's a time frame during the summer.  I was saying it in jest.

From a pure entertainment perspective, I really do not enjoy watching him perform.

His skating is inefficient and awkward.  He moves around the ice in zigzags apparently in a random mindless fashion.  Always with one hand holding the stick and the other hand waiting to grab whatever he can.
I think this is why he gets bumped off the puck so often - if he would just keep two hands on the stick and blade on the ice, maybe the tripod effect would keep him balanced and more effective.

And those crazy eyes freak me out like he has just ingested a gallon of coffee and some Uppers...

Way way too early for this talk. Like... at least a year too early.      :o

Good god man no FA would sign in Toronto ever again!

Yep, I understood it was in jest - was just clarifying the buyout period for myself before I start a petition to 'buy out Clarkson' when it's not even possible. ;)

I don't know doesn't he get all the money and then he can go look for a more sane contract somewhere else? Seems like the Leafs would be the suckers, who wouldn't want 7 years inflated pay for 1 year of shoddy work.

Firstly, I'm not sure how true that is. We've seen other teams do equally unpalatable things to players, and they still manage to land UFAs. I think players understand when a move is justified and when it's not, and I'm not sure too many would consider a Clarkson buyout to be egregious to the point where they wouldn't want to play here. Secondly, with the way that so many "big name" UFA signings tend to turn out and the calibre of the average "big name UFA" these days, I'm pretty sure I'd be okay with that. The mid-range and lower-end UFAs tend to be more productive than the big guys, and they tend to go wherever they can get paid.

THEN EVEN MORE REASON TO DO IT!

Less Komisarek's, Blake's, Connolly's, Beauchemin's, Clarkson's, etc.

We'll gladly take the guys begging for jobs with PTO's and cut from arbitration (MacArthur and Raymond).

Haven't the flyers continually signed and dumped players? Yet free agents keep going there...

Same with the Rangers after they buried Redden in the minors for multiple seasons because he was paid too much. Players understand the business side of things more than we often give them credit for.

I never realized that Weiss is actually doing worse than Clarkson. Brutal! Were these not the two big UFA forwards this summer?

None of the forwards that went to new teams on big multi-year deals this summer have really worked out so far.

Alfredsson has put up decent numbers but he's in a different class.

Ribeiro is on a 60+ point pace, which is about what anybody expected out of him. But yeah, beyond that nothing. Shouldn't really be surprising though, that was clearly an awful group of free agents.
