David Clarkson

Alfredsson has put up decent numbers but he's in a different class.

He's also not on a multi-year deal. The only longer term contract that seems to be working out is Filppula in TBay.

Ribeiro is on a 60+ point pace, which is about what anybody expected out of him. But yeah, beyond that nothing. Shouldn't really be surprising though, that was clearly an awful group of free agents.

Totally forgot about Ribeiro. But, yeah, it's him and Filppula, and that's really it. Everyone else has either struggled or suffered a serious injury (or, in Horton's case, has yet to recover from one).

Clarkson is a classic case of someone who can't live up to their contract.  And as a player looking to win, there's no way I'd give an inch to Nonis in negotiating my contract just to see him waste it on a 4th liner getting 1st line money.  Nonis has just killed the 'we' (ownership/management/players) are going to do this, to win as a group.  Now it's completely every man for themselves.  Team concept is gone.  So bad is Clarkson's contract.

Lets applaud a player because he was "noticeable" on the ice. YAY!

Good god man no FA would sign in Toronto ever again!

Firstly, I'm not sure how true that is. We've seen other teams do equally unpalatable things to players, and they still manage to land UFAs. I think players understand when a move is justified and when it's not, and I'm not sure too many would consider a Clarkson buyout to be egregious to the point where they wouldn't want to play here. Secondly, with the way that so many "big name" UFA signings tend to turn out and the calibre of the average "big name UFA" these days, I'm pretty sure I'd be okay with that. The mid-range and lower-end UFAs tend to be more productive than the big guys, and they tend to go wherever they can get paid.

Exhibit A: Clarkson

Exhibit B: Mason Raymond (he was a UFA right?)

I'm sure Clarkson wouldn't care that much. It was rumoured that edmonton offered more.

Imagine getting bought out then signing the same paycheck again there.

That would be like your boss coming to you today and saying "You're fired! But I'm still paying you your salary and feel free to go work for that company over there and double your paycheck!"

Fun fact: nhl.com lists David Clarkson as the Leafs top scoring RW.

For some reason NHL.com never changes a player from the position they played when they were drafted. It's pretty stupid...

Kessel is a Centre, Ovi is a Left Wing...

Makes comparing positions and stats difficult on NHL.com at the best of times.

So I was dickin around on Capgeek looking at our current situation and playing with lines in my head when I noticed a button I never used before (comparable caphit). So I opened up Clarkson and took a look at 20 of the closest caphit players. I was actually quite surprised. I thought there would be a couple in the same boat as him (an under performing relatively high caphit player). Basically if you remove Havlat who is performing about the same as Clarkson. There's 19 star players listed.

Benn
Krejci
Kane
Lupul
Carter
Hossa
Doan
Horton
Ryan
Kessel
Tavares
Kesler
Neal
Horcoff
Plekanec
Hemsky
Gionta
Bergeron
O'Reilly
And then finally Havlat

I'm seriously awestruck at how out of tune our cap negotiator is with the reality of the present NHL.

Sorry for coming late to the party... just didn't realize it was so bad :/

Maybe the Leafs should put Kessel on center?

Didn't they try that during the Wilson era and failed fairly miserably?

Wow, that is pretty sobering.

It was very short lived. I wouldn't describe it as a miserable failure just sort of 'meh'.
