David Clarkson

Piling on just because this post annoys me.

He has not played up to his contract. I got that.
If you got that, then you wouldn't be happy with his play either.

freer said:
He took less money to play in TO.

Who cares?  He hasn't done jack**** for this team.

freer said:
Even if this guy was scoring 30 goals this year. Guys would complain about him because the team bought out of Grabo.

First off, Clarkson has NOTHING to do with Grabovski.  They don't play the same game.  They don't even play the same damn position.  And, as has been noted, NOBODY HAS EVEN MENTIONED GRABOVSKI.

This guy would have to fight a whole team and score a hat trick before anyone would give him a Kudo's.

No, he would have to do his damn job to get kudos.  He's been brought in to be a premium version of Darcy Tucker, and all we've gotten is a falling-over-pylon.

Seriously, if you want to defend him, go ahead and try, but don't come on here and spout a bunch of BS lies.  Frankly, if he did the job that Bodie is doing right now, I probably wouldn't be complaining about him nearly as much.  He'd still be overpaid, but at least he'd be contributing on a regular basis.

Either way, I don't think you can dismiss the realities of Clarkson turning down more money because you aren't sure if Katz would have matched MLSE's contract structure or even how their offer was structured.

Ok, I'll concede to that. Still, it doesn't really offer me much relief to know that the only team to outbid us for somebody who was supposed to be the most attractive free agent of the summer was (in my opinion) by far the worst front office of the league.

As for the rest of it, I think you're monday morning quarterbacking a little. Edmonton obviously has had some trouble attracting guys in the past but there was a lot of optimism surrounding them this year what with Eakins and the admittedly relative improvement they made last year.

It's hardly Monday morning quarterbacking if in the summer you didn't think Edmonton made enough improvements to get out of the basement and in March they're still in the basement. I'm not sure who was all that optimistic about the Oilers, but man were they wrong.

Wonder why he's not producing:

@b1rky

Clarkson has 100 less shots on goal in only 3 less games than last year.

EDIT: More...

‏@b1rky

I don't know if you can put into words just how badly the Leafs misjudged Clarkson.

@b1rky

He was one of the top shot producers in hockey the last 2 seasons, but was given huge PP minutes and major ES ice time.

@b1rky

They took a guy who was probably overachieving as a #2 fwd, signed him to be a #6 fwd and cut his PP time by 66%.

@b1rky

Clarkson really on plays at 5v5 now.  His contract really can't be hammered enough. And it's not even on Clarkson. This is on the Leafs.

@b1rky

You'd probably have to play Clarkson with Kessel or JvR for him to sniff his previous numbers. And the Leafs have better options.

It shouldn't give you much relief, it was and is a lousy contract regardless of what Edmonton did. I'm just saying that to the extent that you're inclined to think that someone taking less money earns them some sort of pat on the back, and I don't, Clarkson seems to genuinely have done it.

Well, I mean, they weren't in the basement last year. They picked outside the bottom five for the first time in 4 years, hired a very well regarded AHL coach and had some legitimate signs of life. It's not monday morning quarterbacking to say you didn't think Edmonton had improved but I think it is to say there was no reason to think they did and, for that reason, that players wouldn't have legitimate reason to sign there beyond just money.

It's not really about offence, though (at least, not all).  It's about being useless.  He should be grinding and hitting, wearing down the opposition, making things more difficult.  He's not.

When you're making as much as he is, offensive production is a big part.  He never gets that deal if he hadn't scored 30 goals before or even had the totals he had last season.

Dreger "Clarkson is a fierce competitor who will go down trying. Who knows, maybe the best for this season is ahead of him?"

8) 8) 8)

Fierce competitor.  Fierce.

Who goes down trying.  Often.

But he's not paid to score so he gets a free pass.

@Hope_Smoke

Dreger "Kessel had 7 shots but he's paid to score and he didn't"

Dreger is endlessly entertaining during my mornings.

Dreger's getting worse and worse on these morning shows every day. He's starting to just sound like a stupid fan.

I should reiterate that nobody here should take his opinion seriously, just pure entertainment.

You know what's funny, I was watching him on the forecheck yesterday and he really isn't that strong of a hitter. He made some pretty tame plays along the boards. This is in strong contrast to "doesn't hit" Kulemin, who makes clean, hard checks seemingly every play. I really can't find any facet of the game where Clarkson at least remotely excels.
