Finally! Season Opener Leafs at Habs - Saturday - CBC 7:00 PM

Hard to judge Scrivens based on this one.  The Habs are awful.  I can't remember any odd-man rushes or breakways for them, and only that one sustained sequence in the 3rd when we were hemmed in.  Our D deserves credit for a good game, but as others have said, let's see how things go against a quality team.

I hope Reimer gets the start on Monday.

Yeah I think my jury is still out.  The W is worth something but neither Scrivens nor our D were tested that much.  Also once or twice I noticed a shot missing the net while Scrivens looked frozen, hard to tell if he would've had those or just got lucky.

That would surprise me big time, can't see it happening.

Leafs 5-1, Scrivens outstanding, Kessel 2g 1a; Lupul 1g 2a; Kadri 1g 1a
JVR 1g 1a

Ducks 5-0 over canucks. Schneider chased after letting in 4 goals on first
8 shots.

Yee hah...!

So I blew it on the first prediction but Schneider pulled after letting in 5 goals on 14 shots..! Nice....

In all honesty, Scrivens didn't deserve a shutout.  Now let's see if he can hang on.

What?
No kidding, guy just comes in with the pressure of Leaf Nation on his back, with all the Luongo rumours swirling around and a surprise start over Reimer in a building tough to play in on opening night even against a weak Habs team.  What did he do, he was solid, no weak goals, did what most good defences allow there goalies to do and that is shine.  So is that Scrivens fault, is it his fault that he wasn't peppered and forced to steal a game.  I can remember many nights that a bad performance in goal translated into a Leaf loss despite a deserved victory from the rest of the troops.  Scratching my head here.  If you mean that most goalie SO's are due to a goalie standing on his head, well that for the most part isn't always the case, usually it is a team effort.

All I meant was that if he had gotten a shutout, it would have been much more due to the poor play of the Habs than to his own stellar play.  He looked shaky at times.  But he did hang on and get the W so I am certainly not inclined to rag on him too awful much.

Still would like to see what Reimer looks like next game.

I was surprised to see Kadri got as little ice time as he did. I definitely noticed him when he was on the ice, and it felt like he was out there a lot.

I thought Liles had a really strong game. Made a couple of nice offensive and defensive plays, but was largely unnoticeable, which is a good thing for defencemen :)

I was thoroughly unimpressed with van Riemsdyk. I thought he was the worst player on the ice, possibly for both teams. I know it's early so I'm not jumping to conclusions. Plus he might still be bothered by that bruise.

A shaky shutout is still a shutout. I don't think you have to stand on your head to deserve it necessarily.

Leafs played well enough for a win. That Komarow sure is fast!  Kadri can stand his ground but needs to blossom more.  All in all, pleased with the way the team was consistent throughout th game, save for in the last few minutes after Gionta's goal with the Habs pressuring the Leaf defense.  Going to have to learn how to get out of these situations a little better...

...and then there was Scrivens.  Seemed to be his own natural self (sans Allaire) and netminded fortuitously when called upon.  Lots of motivation here to showcase himself.

What I particularly enjoy to see is Carlyle behind that bench, and how he conducts himself as per communicating with his players.  Let's face it, the difference between Carlyle and ex-coach Wilson is like night & day.  Not that a coach needs to be animated, but, he (Carlyle) is establishing a connection with his players and emitting a sense of positivity, as compared to a certain 'void' under Wilson.

So far, so good.

GO LEAFS GO!!

Yeah Markov turned as the hit came not like Kadri went after his numbers. Oh well Leafs won regardless.

It was boarding, though, not hitting from behind.

What I saw on the replay was Markov looking up, seeing Kadri coming, then turning toward the boards at the last second and drawing the call.

It was a garbage play by Markov, and that turning into the boards stuff has got to start being recognized...having said that, Kadri certainly has to learn to pick his spots.

I agree with this, more or less.

JVR was bad bad.

But I'm not going to jump on anyone after only one game,  I'll wait until game two to do that.

And there's the first instance of my biggest pet peeve: the phrase "compete level."

Why not?: "he likes his competitiveness" or "he likes how hard he competes"

I think the word you're looking for is heart.

Just watched the game and thought the first 2 periods they played pretty decent, but by the end of third I thought they were lucky to get out of that game with a clean 2 points with no OT.

I thought Scrivens looked good positionally and deserves the next start. Of course, this was against Montreal, who without Price would be A LOT worse than the Leafs. So I think the next couple of games will be the real test for this team. Glad they won though! Go Leafs!

Kulemin with a comedy of errors, hits Grabovski behind the net then goes offsides.

Actually I remember watching those plays and it was all on Grabbo who skated right into Kule and then he took a bit too long with the pass into the zone.

I thought the 2nd line did quite well last night as well.  Carlyle seemed to deploy them as a shutdown line against the Habs top line and they did well - Kulemin led all forwards in ice-time.

In a lot of ways, last night looked like a pre-season game with guys out of sync, passes not being crisp and some other stuff that we don't see as much of when the season really gets going. It's going to take a week or two before we see teams around the league as they actually are.

I really enjoyed Randy's post-game interview, extremely honest.

Talked about us being a bad team for a long time, talked about us being the punchline in people's jokes around the NHL and what he and his players are striving to do to change that.
