Thai season, yeah I think he is.  When both are on their game Matthews is still better but something isn't right with him.  Way too many games where he looks ordinary.  His defensive game is great but the offensive game from Matthews this year doesn't have nearly the level of dominance it usually does

I agree Matthews is good defensively, but even there, better than Marner?
Yes he is and it's not close.  Matthews leads the league in total defensive plays and that's not close either.

A near-perfect response game, and a truly perfect 3rd period.  Nice to see.

I didn't notice Gustafsson but Schenn was out there.

He played well. Got him mixed up a few times with Gio.
Gotta give it to the new guys who all played very well. O'Reilly is a dog on a bone out there. He does all the little things so well. Brodie was exceptional and McCabe looked a lot more calm out there.

Wow, 2 games in a row Rielly used physicality, used his body to influence a game, once in each game, wonders may never cease, I like it.

Last year those shots would've gone in for Matthews, he seems far more dangerous with Marner, which makes sense.

In the 1st and parts of the 2nd TO looked the same, not a lot of quality chances against but there were some hum dingers, not the words that were in my head. Later in the 2nd and the 3rd, TO was locking it down, it looked like a quality lock down, not totally reliant on Woll, who had an excellent game.

There was a lot to like about this game, a quality LW might be all that's really needed, Toffoli like.

Schenn, McCabe, Acciari & Lafferty provided 12 of the teams 18 hits.

Encouraged with another steady performance by Woll. I haven't seen him enough to be very conclusive. Assessing goalie talent in today's NHL not a personal strength for me.

37% of the Leafs on the ice were new. They looked quite disjointed - particularly in the early part of the game. To be expected. There's probably another trade coming today so maybe some deer in the headlights stuff with a couple. I would not say that about Holl who has been making a bit of a statement the last two games - and he might be the best trade chip off the roster.

Matthews still looks off to me. Have other teams figured him out some defensively or is he nursing something? I'm not sure.

Yeah. It?s pretty plain to see Matthews isn?t playing to his full capacity this season. I can?t see it being because teams have figured him out as I?d have to assume they would have solved Marner then too. My guess is an undisclosed ailment or personal issue he?s dealing with.

His confidence is extremely low and not playing with Marner most of the season has also played a big part with his numbers. You can clearly see his offence come alive at times but it comes in fits and spurts.

Let?s hope that whatever it is he?s able to get over it come playoff time. Because without Matthews playing like Matthews we have less of a chance winning that opening round series.

I saw Morgan Rielly be physical, two games in a row, no, no it's true, maybe the addition of 3 physical players has awakened Rielly to the idea that hockey players can use things other than their sticks to defend, wow.

I don't think most are aware that he's 6'1", 222 lbs, not small but not Engvall big, but with Engvall physicality as a d-man.
