Isn't the trailing player the C's responsibility?  Trying to remember from when I played!

Not if the trailer is the 4th guy across the line and a defenseman.

This game's far from over.  I wonder why these announcers haven't caught on to that yet?  Clueless.

Nah, Leafs put 'er into lockdown mode when they have a lead in the 3rd.

Lockdown?  Did you say ... Lockdown?  8)

They've been saying that all along. Keep bringing up how many goals the Flyers have scored in the 3rd.

What an awful play by Kessel. Gives the puck away and then lets his man go all the way for the goal. He's having a brutal game.

I'd say it depends on the system, but the way we always played was to skate back hard, covering anyone who was open and nearby. Wingers, based on positioning, typically covered the guys coming in late before taking defensive assignments when the rush was done. The guy was right in front of Kessel and he didn't bother to try and catch up.  Just a lazy play.

But Timonen was also like right beside Bozak.

Frazer McLaren's fighting record:

Ottawa - Leafs down 1-0 early in the 2nd period.  Ottawa scores 2 minutes later.
Boston - Game tied 0-0.  Boston scores 30 seconds later.
LA - Trailing 1-0.  Leafs score 4 minutes later on the PP.
Ottawa - Leafs up 3-1.  Ottawa scores 4 minutes later (game goes to SO)
NYI - Leafs up 2-0.  Islanders score 5 minutes later.
Boston - 0-0, 1:48 into the game.
Calgary - 0-0; 1:28 into the game.
Pittsburgh - 1-1

Not one of those fights was in the defense of a player.

And he was also the fourth guy on the rush. Based on the flow of the play, Bozak's job was to prevent a three on two from happening and the wingers' job was to take the Flyers' D.

McLaren and Orr may well be the worst players getting a semi-regular shift in the entire league. They do nothing well.

There were already 3 Leafs back - JVR, Phaneuf and Gunnarsson.  JVR was taking his man to the net, Phaneuf had the 2nd Flyers player going to the net in the middle, and Gunnarsson had the puck carrier.  At that point it is a 3 on 3 rush.  If Bozak takes Timonen instead of staying in the middle of the puck carrier and Timonen, maybe it doesn't happen.

Possibly, but I don't blame Bozak for following the puck on that particular play.

Anyway, hopefully  the top line wakes up in the third - save for a few great rushes by JVR they have been pretty noticeably bad tonight.

Just for the record, here's what I mean:

Just a series of photos from the goal. You should be able to tell who each Leaf is:

JVR had the guy on the far right the whole time and Gunnarsson and Phaneuf identified the two forwards on the left. Kessel was late to get back, but Bozak had Timonen within 6 feet of him but was skating with his head down and didn't see him. He was just skating towards the puck and wasn't covering anybody.

I get that, but what the picture doesn't depict is the flow of the puck coming into the zone (and Bozak trying to catch up to it).  Double-teaming the puck-carrier on a rush is a typical play for a centerman on a rush, and it's pretty clearly what Bozak had in mind coming back. If he takes the late guy, maybe the puck carrier gets n opportunity to cut across the zone and shoot from the slot.  Yada yada yada.

Good old Carlyle hockey.  Early in the year we played a 3-line game.  Now we are down to a 2-line game.

Also, I hate you Steve Mason.

Lol, I was checking the points stats... Kessel and Getzlaf are tied with 70 points - Kessel is +3, Getzlaf is a +28.

Ovechkin is a minus 24. Unbelievable. He's a virtual liability 5-5.
