Game 23: Devils @ Leafs - Mar. 4th, 7:00PM - SN, Fan 590

Kadri's got an ego on him but Carlyle will have to toe a fine line between criticism that pushes the player to be better and sourpuss sarcasm, which was Wilson's stock in trade.

edit: Also the first (or second) question was something like what did you think of Kadri and his response was "You guys just want to anoint him, don't you?".

Kudos to the imagery and all but, and one of you Roman sorts can help me out with this, but isn't anointing something you do to a sick person? Where you rub them with oil? I know it can mean consecrate but...I mean, just say consecrate.

Imagine the posts on here if Wilson made those comments about Nazem Kadri.

You don't have to imagine, just look back. Like Potvin said, they sound exactly like what Wilson would say about him.

in my opinion it's a dumb way to do things. If he does something you don't like, tell him personally. Then tell the media he's playing well.  This bizarre negative media thing they see fit to do has got to stop.

And that's even apart from the fact that he's been by far their best and most consistent player this year, and was good again tonight.

I don't watch nearly enough post game news conferences from head coaches around the league to know how other coaches do it.

A wins a win I'll take it. good third leafs. lets hope we start playing well all three for the next few games.

I hope we don't enter the cycle of appointing Kadri the "saviour" as that seems to be starting the last few games. The media is going to build him up and then inevitably when he does enter a period of time that he struggles it's going to wreak havoc. I also think Naz has a healthy ego
and wonder what this other-side-of-the-ditch adoration will do to him. Perhaps this is Carlyle's way of toning the Naz adoration down - for the good of Naz.

But I do agree - talk to him in private and if asked by media you can still be complementary without slamming the kid.

Ego can of course be a problem.  But the best antidote is to tell him personally that the media are out to lunch, and that if he doesn't continue to do the little things right he'll have his ass stapled to the bench.  There's no need to go through the media to make that kind of statement, and definitely no reason to go out of your way to be negative to "compensate" for media positivity or some such stupid thing.

Edit: This serves as a response to the above as well.  Leaf coaches have been far too worried about who is or isn't getting appointed "saviour" (as they put it).  Let the media do their thing.  Not much can be done and in the end it doesn't matter anyway.

I like how often the Sun is being used as representative of the media in general. It's like swearing off of music because you once heard a Black Eyed Peas song.

shows you what i know..i thought it looked as if kadri's line was about the only line consistently generating offense throughout the game

it was by far the best line tonight.

Hmmm.  Can we correctly say that Nonis anointed Brown with the Oil...?

Awesome to see Reimer play a solid game.

You can't replace Bozak with Kadri on the top PP unit because Kadri isn't the faceoff man Bozak is. If you don't think faceoffs matter, well, I don't know what to tell you.

The fourth line needs to play. And they usually play a decent shift. They had tough luck tonight, especially on the second goal, and they were benched for it. Just like Carlyle sent a message to the top line a few nights ago by giving Orr equal ice-time, he sent a message to the fourth line tonight. Work hard, grind and don't put the team in dangerous situations. I'm sure it will be received.

Nice win, eh?!

Great win.  A come-from-behind victory over a team (New Jersey) that doesn't allow that to happen often.  Leafs persevered and became the smarter team in that third period.  Kudos to Reimer for holding the fort, so to speak.

GO LEAFS GO!!!

I personally thought Grabovski's line was the best line out there.

Looking at the play-by-play report, he had 5 defensive zone draws in the 3rd and only won two of them. 3 for 11 in the defensive zone for the night. Kind of an odd night for him as the other 3 Leafs centres were all close to 60% or above it (Kadri was 58%).

I watched Carlyle's press conference after the game and he apparently wasn't very happy with Kadri's performance in the second period, which is what I'm assuming led to the decreased minutes in the third. Criticized him for trying to go one-on-four against the Devils and said something like he caused the parade of turnovers in the period. I thought that was a little odd until I remembered Leafs coaches weren't allowed to say nice things about him.

edit: Also the first (or second) question was something like what did you think of Kadri and his response was "You guys just want to anoint him, don't you?".

Plain and simple, Carlye is an idiot.  Kadri has been the best player on the team and hasn't been close.  Yet he continues to give inferior players more ice time and respect.  Kessel has yet to go into the corner to get a puck.

Carlye is flat out lying here.  In the 2nd period Kadri was a beast.  On one shift he put the puck on the boards and went around the defensman in the offensive zone and then crushed him into the boards and took the puck.  The next shift the Devils were in the attacking zone and Kadri layed out another player.

I like that Carlye has them playing good defensive hockey, but he is still a very questionable lineup caller.  He was finally forced to sit the 4th line last night after putting them in awful position after awful position.  Seriously Randy, why the hell were you so adamant on having the 4th line take defensive zone draws?
