Game 23: Devils @ Leafs - Mar. 4th, 7:00PM - SN, Fan 590

You can't replace Bozak with Kadri on the top PP unit because Kadri isn't the faceoff man Bozak is. If you don't think faceoffs matter, well, I don't know what to tell you.

Bozak, since starting off the year on a torrid faceoff pace is now down to 54% on the draw.  His last 3 games have been under 50%.  Kadri has now gone 4 of his last 6 games over 50 percent.  Even so.  Lets break it down.  Say you did switch Bozak and Kadri, Bozak wins 5.4 out of every 10 and Kadri wins 4.6 out of every 10.  So 1 faceoff difference out of 10 is the reason to leave a 3rd liner on the top power play line? Doesn't seem to make sense to me.  Faceoffs are important, but not in this case.

The fourth line needs to play. And they usually play a decent shift. They had tough luck tonight, especially on the second goal, and they were benched for it. Just like Carlyle sent a message to the top line a few nights ago by giving Orr equal ice-time, he sent a message to the fourth line tonight. Work hard, grind and don't put the team in dangerous situations. I'm sure it will be received.

The problem is they should never take defensive zone faceoffs, which Carlye lets them do all the time.

Looking at the play-by-play report, he had 5 defensive zone draws in the 3rd and only won two of them. 3 for 11 in the defensive zone for the night. Kind of an odd night for him as the other 3 Leafs centres were all close to 60% or above it (Kadri was 58%).

I watched Carlyle's press conference after the game and he apparently wasn't very happy with Kadri's performance in the second period, which is what I'm assuming led to the decreased minutes in the third. Criticized him for trying to go one-on-four against the Devils and said something like he caused the parade of turnovers in the period. I thought that was a little odd until I remembered Leafs coaches weren't allowed to say nice things about him.

edit: Also the first (or second) question was something like what did you think of Kadri and his response was "You guys just want to anoint him, don't you?".

Plain and simple, Carlye is an idiot.  Kadri has been the best player on the team and hasn't been close.  Yet he continues to give inferior players more ice time and respect.  Kessel has yet to go into the corner to get a puck.

Carlye is flat out lying here.  In the 2nd period Kadri was a beast.  On one shift he put the puck on the boards and went around the defensman in the offensive zone and then crushed him into the boards and took the puck.  The next shift the Devils were in the attacking zone and Kadri layed out another player.

I like that Carlye has them playing good defensive hockey, but he is still a very questionable lineup caller.  He was finally forced to sit the 4th line last night after putting them in awful position after awful position.  Seriously Randy, why the hell were you so adamant on having the 4th line take defensive zone draws?

This is the 4th coach in a row that you've characterized as idiot, actually not sure if you said that about Maurice. I remember when you were calling Quinn an idiot on a regular basis because he wasn't giving Mariusz Czerkawski a chance, who ended up playing 16 NHL games after he left the leafs before he went to the Swiss league. Every coach is going to have things he does that some fans don't agree with, that doesn't make them idiots.

Just to make it easier...any coach that coaches the team I like will most likely be characterized an idiot, so you can add to the list:

John Beilein
Jim Leyland
Laurence Frank
Jim Schwartz

I will add that Brady Hoke (UM football coach) is not an idiot at all.

There is aobviously a method to Carlyles madness in handling Kadri. The kid has always been accused of being cocky. Why should Randy feed into that. He is trying t keep the kid on an even keel. I like hearing him talk about his mistakes instead of bragging about him.. Not every coach is going to do 100% of what we want them to.. I like how Carlyle has them playing..

Kadri has responded well to Carlyle's coaching this season, I think he's handling him perfectly.  Sure i'd like to see more ice time from Kadri especially on PP situations, but I think he's coming along nicely.  Still only 22 years old and he's coming into his own.  If he continues at this pace he'll be a beast at 25.

I wonder how much working out with Gary Roberts has helped.  I would guess it has helped him maintain his level of play, due to conditioning improvements.

Such as pleasure to see all these young stars working with Gary. Glad I saw him play for the Leafs and what a force he was.

Yeah, imagine how good he's going to be when he's not so fat.

Oopps, that was, like, so September 2012 of me.
