Gardiner second only to Beauchemin in overall toi for the game...
He was really a star in this one... I'm kind of surprised how he's kind of being ignored in the MotM votes.
Gardiner has led his team in ice time in the last two games (28 mins in Dallas and 25 mins tonight). On the season, he's at 19:57 mins/game. I think Phaneuf is playing a little hurt and they've given Luke & Jake the baton for a bit. In my mind, he's playing better than Kaberle & Markov when they broke in though it's early and he may yet hit a wall. Regardless, he's been pretty remarkable so far considering he's a rookie.
Apart from that Adam fella in Buffalo, is there a more impressive rookie in the league? I can't think of one off the top of my head.
Nugent-Hopkins for one.
There's a long, long way to go this season, but it would be hilarious if it turns out the Leafs received a top 10 (or better
) Art Ross guy and a top 5 Calder guy for Beauchemin.
I'm one who thought Lupul was damaged goods with his health history. Funny how the media has ragged on the Leafs for medical updates. In the case of Lupul & Lombardi, they got medical results that surprised a lot of people.
If Gardiner & Lupul keep it up, many will regard that trade as a major steal. Personally, I think Gardiner's play alone makes it very lopsided because Beauchemin will be a 32 yr old UFA this summer who continues to appear as if his best days are well behind him while I think it's fairly safe to expect we haven't seen the best of Jake yet and we've got a couple of more years at a $1.1 mil cap hit (including bonuses). And Lupul is signed through next season.
A heck of a trade.
