Another winnable game flushed

Top line blew it on the winning goal.

How so?  Seemed like it was Holzer's man who took the shot, and the Leafs had numbers back.

Blurry stream but Dupuis looked like he had lots of time and space to take that shot.  Meanwhile at the other end our guys were covered with clogged up shooting and passing lanes.  Top line includes top D.

I don't know, Kessel made the pass to JVR that, when I saw it, I thought he should have made, but then Crosby got in and got his stick on to deflect it.  I thought it was going to get through for basically a tap-in.  Didn't, of course.

I guess in the end we can analyze that goal against to death but with one goal for you're not winning many games in this league.  Offense has been incompetent lately 3 goals in the last 2 games.

Turns out playing Holzer against Crosby and Pitsburgh's 1st line is as stupid as it sounds. I can't wait until the Leafs get a real top-pairing defense partner for Phaneuf.

Well, thought the Leafs played quite good; got beat on a couple of decent chances/mental mistakes. They definitely deserved a better fate.

Franson and Liles stood out to me on the backend, with Holzer, mostly, playing a really strong game as well. Grabovski needs a scorer on his wing; Mclement and Komarov are fine players but seriously, throw the guy a frickin bone here.

Officiating was as brutal as usual. Bodychecks called as penalties; icings not waved off when they should be; and I can't believe how many Leafs were thrown out of that faceoff circle in situations where: a) it should have been the other centre, or b) nobody should have been thrown out.

What, because of a couple of minutes of sloppy play in a 60 minute game? They actually shut down that line pretty damn well all game, depsite Holzer obviously not being a top-pairing defenceman.

I thought he played well, you can't directly blame him for the goals, it was poor coverage from all 5 on the ice.  I thought he and Phaneuf took away many opportunities from that line.

I like all the talk about what the Leafs "deserved". It does my heart good to think of professional sports as a field that rewards hard work and giving it your all as opposed to being a harsh and cold world where winners and losers are determined by the number of goals they're able to score and prevent.

Come on, don't waste that ripping, satirical wit on here; put that nugget on twitter! You will surely set the interweb ablaze, Oscar!

Whoever that was in the Leafs net tonight, the name escapes me at the moment, I thought had a solid game.

Why his name would be Rodney.  I think from here on out I am just going to call him that.  Rodney played well tonight but I don't know how he couldn't have foreseen that reverse back hand pass by Crosby to Dupuis and how could he not see through Kessel's fat @ss on the second one.

Sad to see that so many people are almost ready to throw in the towel already.
There is a lot of hockey left and last year was last year. This year we have a system and special teams that are actually showing up for the game for the most part. We have played above expectations and i think too many people are ready to hold us against a higher mark then we are ready to be held against.

We are still in the playoffs atm after all.

Try and see the glass half full rather then half empty. Besides Lup's is back soon :)

Man I hope he can play Saturday, but we might not see him until next week.

Like I said earlier the defensive lapses were bad but in the end we only scored 1 goal.  Lupul should help to refire the offense, and he will also push some talent down the depth chart onto Kadri's line (or play there himself for a while).

Grabovski and Kulemin make me sad this year, another dry spell with 1 point between them on this losing streak.  I know they are used as the shutdown line but their offense drying up for long stretches sucks for the team.  It puts the pressure on the Bozak and Kadri lines to provide all the offense so when one or both of those lines doesn't score 1+ in a game we lose.  Grabovski is way overpaid to play just defense.

do you think gunnarson is top pairing material?  Who else do they have?  If Komi played up to his contract they'd have someone.

Yeah I'd love to see the trolls eat him alive.

As long as this team can't hold a lead, they won't be winning too many games.  Time to wake up, so to speak.  On account of the shortened season, this is the worst possiblc time to go into a slump, especially a four or five-game one.

C'mon Leafs, you can do better!

Based on what happened on the ice the Leafs should've won this one but earlier in the season they won games they had no business winning so I guess it all evens up in the end. A 4-game losing streak looks bad on paper but the opposition (besides Winnipeg) hasn't exactly been easy either. With the way Crosby's line is playing the Pens are almost unbeatable right now (7 wins in a row) and the Bruins are no slouches either. Granted, the Leafs didn't play that well prior to the streak either but against weaker teams they'll find ways to win even with sub-par performances. The next 3 games will be an easier stretch and the Leafs should rebound with 4-6 points from those. After that it's Boston twice and from then on the schedule gets considerably easier for the rest of the season. Barring major confidence issues from this losing streak I think the Leafs will hold on to a playoff spot until the end.
