GDT PreSeason Game #5 Buffalo Sabres @Toronto..... CBC 7 pm et al

I haven't seen anything in the pre-season to suggest our penalty kill is going to be any better this year than last. I'll reserve final judgement until the end of the preseason (lots of young guys, 5 games in 6 nights, and no real practice time for special teams so far) but just looks like the same old same old.

Too tough to tell right now.  They haven't had many practices, let alone many practices with the final group, to work on anything.  I'm assuming the new coaches will hopefully bring something new to the table on that front.

That, and with all the guys who won't make the final roster getting PK time in the games, it's really hard to judge what's going on there. Most of the regulars have looked pretty good on the PK throughout the preseason from what I can tell  (and by that, I mean better than last season) - especially the Army-Bozak combo - but, at the same time, they've also been facing mishmashes of NHLers, prospects and AHL roster fillers, so, really, not much of substance to really be gleaned from it.

It's going to get pretty annoying pretty quick to hear Healy and the rest of the NHIC crew spend the entire game every Saturday night praising whoever the Leafs are playing against.  Enough.

Isn't Vanek's 'backcheck' Healy is gushing about just interference??

Buffalo seems to interfere with Toronto on many of the shoot-ins

No kidding.  You'd figure that CBC wouldn't mess with it's No 1 hockey draw by dissin' their team all the time.  Maybe it's time the leafstv started getting it's act together.

Gus has been really solid.

I think so as well, considering he is playing with a very young defense in front of him. I don't know why there are so many less than encouraging comments about his game tonight. He's faced near 40 shots hasn't he?
I also thought that this young defense has done a poor job getting players out from in front of his net tonight also, he had guys in front of him on both the first goals and he had absolutely no chance on the last one.

Between the number of point-blank shots and the number of heavily screened shots he's faced, it's pretty remarkable that he's only let 3 in.

I'll admit Gus has looked much better since the first goal.

I know the Leafs aren't fully dressed tonight but it doesn't bode well for the special teams:  We're winning 2-0 5-on-5 (thanks completely to grabs) and losing 3-0 on special teams.

Well played game by a few guys including Gus in the 2nd and 3rd periods. I can see there being a tough decision with 4 or 5 guys; should be interesting.

I read some of this before I started watching and only caught the last half of the third, but it was striking to read about Gustavsson on here and then to hear the CBC crew go on praising his game tonight for a good few minutes.

As Potvin has pointed out, and Wilson will probably tell you the same, that the Leafs have had virtually no time to work on their special teams, certainly not as a team. When the cuts are made tomorrow and the near completed team is practicing everyday, you'll probably see some better movement and squads start to form.

He was much better in the back half of the game than he was in the 1st half.

I'll be pleased with the equivalent of 34 saves on 37 shots all season.  :)

Yeah we all know Wilson can whip special teams into shape!

There might be hope with some of the new assistants I guess.
