General Leafs Rumour Updates...

Brian Glennie said:
1. Somebody said we could get a 5th overall for Phaneuf.

Well, no. jdh1 said "how about we send them Phaneuf for the fifth overall pick" and not "Phaneuf is worth the fifth overall pick".

Brian Glennie said:
2. I said Nonis wouldn't even be offered what Calgary got for him in 2010.

Right, and I said that you're overestimating the difference in value between what the Leafs dealt for him last time and the fifth overall pick. Last year the 9th overall pick went for Corey Schneider, a back-up goalie with potential to be a very good starter. The Leafs traded two good young players at two valuable positions plus someone on pace for a near 30 goal season for Phaneuf.

Like I said, you're buying into a false narrative. The idea that we gave "nothing" for Phaneuf just isn't true. If the Leafs had traded the players in the Phaneuf deal individually at the deadline they probably could have got multiple first and second round picks.

Brian Glennie said:
3. Busta and Tigger said no, in fact, he was actually worth a lot more, both then as well as now, and the only reason Calgary undersold was because Brian Burke was the only GM they let know that Phaneuf was available. Just him.

No. They said that we don't know if they shopped him around. I appreciate that you want to paint that as ridiculous but it's not. Sometimes a team simply doesn't want to offer a player around because they want to deal him with a minimum of noise and disruption, like the Bruins did with Joe Thornton. Sometimes a team will simply work out a deal they really like with the first team they call. I don't buy into the idea that Phaneuf was drastically undersold in 2010 but even if I did, teams make bad trades all the time.

Brian Glennie said:
4. Gee, I said, Really? That seems like an awfully strange way to go about dealing such a big name player and when I looked it up I found stuff like this:
http://espn.go.com/nhl/blog/_/name/lebrun_pierre/id/4808038/nhl-calgary-flames-gm-denies-dion-phaneuf-trade-block

And a lot can change in the month between that article and when the trade actually got made. Again, when Thornton was traded I think everyone was surprised because if there'd been the slightest hint he was available this board would have had roughly 8 billion threads suggesting trades for him. Not every decision made by GM's is as meticulously planned as you seem to think. I don't think it requires too much investigation to look at the Flames management at the time and come to the conclusion that they didn't always make the smartest decision possible.

Is it possible he's a (cancer) in the dressing room like he was in Calgary. If thats the case, its no wonder they've choked/tripped in the past couple of years?  Maybe with him being the best D man available that we take what we can get.
IMO, I wish he could work out and up his value for a future trade.

Honestly, the whole "locker room cancer" stuff is usually media driven BS. They've failed over the past few seasons due to poor talent, poor strategy and poor goaltending.

That pretty much sums it up on both counts as far as Iam concerned

I thought there was a bit of a power struggle with Dion and Iggy. I'm probably wrong as Dion was young and "broody" at the best of times. He's not the most well spoken communicator as far as captains go and maybe the respect wasn't there when he trys to rally the troops in their major slide at the end of the year. Maybe cancer is the wrong word, maybe he just dosn't have the respect of the older players and the youngins follow suit.
We are still in the rebuild and he may fetch a decent top six and bring up the shining stars from the Marlies and let these guys gel for a couple of years. Lets hope our top notch scouting staff find a couple of diamonds in the rough and they start getting some playoff time under their belts.
thnx for the different opinions, kinda gives me an idea that he may not be the ideal captain for our team.

I don't understand.  Why the quotes without a reference.  And if you're being sarcastic, then the quotes throw the reader off.

Agent for Jay McClement says there have been no talks with Leafs and none are planned at this point

I wasn't the biggest McClement fan of course, but I do find this pretty odd. Especially considering how he was used on the PK. We're about to lose 3 of our top-4 penalty killing forwards (Jay, Kulemin, and Raymond). D'Amigo can possibly step into one of those roles. JVR was 3rd in ice-time, ahead of Raymond. Bozak was just behind them. But those two probably shouldn't be seeing increases in that area considering the amount of EV and PP ice-time they play.

I'm actually alright with this.  Addition through subtraction would be a good approach for the Leafs.  They have a farm team.  At some point you have to use the assets that are on it.  D'Amigo, Carter, Holland should be on the big club.  If you figure that Orr will probably stick around because he has one more year, you can possibly fill out the final two spots with Carrick and maybe Komarov if you can sign him.  I don't know if the Leafs would definitely be better, but they would have people on the roster who would be inspired to play on the Leafs.  Also they would be a lot cheaper, so they would not be right up against the cap.

I don't. I see it as a pretty clear acknowledgment that the team needs someone with a more well-rounded game in that position instead of a PK specialist.

I like McClement, I think he got way too much negative attention for the way the team struggled on the PK, but honestly unless he's close to the minimum what's the point? You can find passable PK'ers out there and he shouldn't be taking minutes away from a younger player.

If the Leafs are going to provide the same amount of ice-time to the 4th line, then I'm okay with McClement and his mostly PKing role.  But if they actually start playing, then I'd rather see him gone.

I think I would okay with the Leafs keeping their pick, signing a proven backup, Komarov and maybe Dan Boyle in free agency, trading Reimer and Franson for some sort of futures to play on the farm, and then filling spots on the big club with Marlies.  Then you just let it ride....

Man.... The first thing that comes to mind when hearing this (among other news of late) is...... Get Ready Next Season For.....'THE MARLIES 2.0' (The Leafs Version).

The draft hasn't even happened yet. It's so early in the off season. All the Leafs not negotiating with McClement is indicative of is McClement not being back with the Leafs next season. Same with the other actual news - it's all solely points to those players not likely being back with the Leafs. You wanted roster changes, and you're getting them, but, I think you're reading too much into what has and hasn't happened so far.

Yeah, but when it comes to the Leafs, when the do things, they usually do it wrong.  So doing nothing, may be right, because it would be hard to do nothing wrong.

And while there is a theoretical 'worse than last year' for the PK, its' pretty meaningless.  If you have a bottom 5 PP/PK, that doesn't bode well for your playoff aspirations.  Bottom line.

That, and even if it is worse, it's unlikely to be much worse. The worst PKs in the league have generally only been around 2 percent less effective than the Leafs were last season, which translates to ~5 more goals against. Over the course of 82 games, that's pretty meaningless.

Just to add to this thought...

Dreger "Bodie probably doesn't come back with the Leafs. Raymond, I can't say. Negotiations happening now. He wants 3 @ $3"

Dreger "McClement, probably doesn't come back. Kulemin, no (emphatically). Ranger, probably won't be back"

Raymond 3@3?
wow.  Yeah he replaced the goal scoring of McArthur but he was MIA physically and defensively forgettable.  If he's not scoring, he's basically useless to the leafs.
