Getzlaf and Ryan "in play" according to Bob Murray

Someone told me Darren Millard said Bob Murray was at the Leafs game last night?

LEEEEEGZZ!

Helene, the Ducks beat writer who broke the story/interview with Bob Murray putting the big 3 on notice, tweeted yesterday that Bob Murray was on a plane out East to scout some games.

She never said which games or teams he was interested in.  It's possible he didn't even get in, in time for the game last night.  Although, if he did, he caught a pretty good night to see Kulemin.  I thought Franson and Kadri were also good (and those 2 would be some likely targets as well).

Just an fyi Getzlaf is -17 this year, he is approaching Bozak last year +- numbers.  To be fair he does have 27 points but you have to wonder what happened to him?

He has never been a minus player until this year. I would chalk that up to overall terrible team performance more than I would worry about him suddenly losing the ability to take care of his defensive duties.

Bozak is a +4 this year.  Doesn't that tell you that overall better team play can help that stat?

This season has been an anomaly, but with Getzlaf he has a tendency to go through periods where he half-asses it, and then he'll flip a switch and goes into beast mode.

What we're seeing now is him at his worst, but come playoff time there's hardly anyone you'd want on your team over Getzlaf.

Probably a number of reasons, but none that would concern me too much about his long-term play.

Anaheim doesn't exactly have a lot of depth at forward and their blueline isn't exactly made up of defensive stalwarts. Getzlaf's line regularly goes up against the other teams top line on a regular basis while likely playing with a weak defensive pairing. Then add the fact that Hiller doesn't really appear to be on the top of the his game and it's not exactly surprising that the puck is going in quite a bit while Getzlaf is on the ice.

With that said, Getzlaf does have to share some of the blame. It's funny that you mentioned Bozak last season because he recently discussed his awful plus/minus from last season. He said that his lack of scoring made him frustrated and it lead to him taking more and more chances to put the puck in the other teams net. Of course trying to force a scoring opportunity like that usually results in one on your own team. Given Getzlaf's lack of scoring this season (which is what I would be more concerned about), it wouldn't be surprising if he's going through the same sort of thing.

This "in play" thread keeps conjuring up this image in my head...

Mirtle's in dream mode here. But it is a pretty fun dream....

But this group is well-aware of its necessity to avoid a slow start. This is the first camp for the Ducks under Bruce Boudreau and the players like the pace. Especially compared to Randy Carlyle.

"Randy was great to me and I was with him for a long time. At times, I think Randy had trouble adapting to the newer game and the fact that guys come in in shape," Getzlaf said. "You don't have to spend all of training camp beating guys up so they're in shape. I think at times we got a little carried away with some of those things."
....
Assuming the distractions that can come with contract negotiations and inevitable trade rumors don't get in the way.

"I'm going to play and hope to get a deal done here in the next little while," Getzlaf said. "I've been through it once before where we did [a contract] during the season. It didn't affect me then, it won't affect me now."

Perry sounded equally unconcerned.

"I'm not even going to worry about it," he said. "If things get handled, they get handled. We'll see what happens."

Looks like Getzlaf hopes to re-sign soon. Apparently, his wife is from the Anaheim area.

From his one comment, Perry seems more open to the possibility of moving on.

I really was hoping that the Leafs could get Getzlaf and have him establish himself for at least 8 years in Toronto.  Seeing him in Vancouver tonight made me realize how strong he is physically, how responsible he is defensively as well as creative offensively he is.

Unfortunately he seems quite happy in Anaheim.

I had forgotten about Getzlaf's wife being from out there. He seems unlikely to move.

Perry, on the other hand, seems more open to a move and the Leafs will have the room to sign him. It seems like not that long ago I was living in London and watching him and the Knights.

How will the Ducks deal with impending UFA's Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry?

McKenzie - It's going to hang over them all season until something goes one way or the other.  I can tell you that Pat Morris, the agent for Corey Perry, is heading to California in the next week or 10 days, not necessarily to speak to GM Bob Murray of the Anaheim Ducks, but to sit down with Perry to have a strategy session about whether they are going to negotiate or go to free agency.  The representative for Ryan Getzlaf, Gerry Johannson, will initiate dialogue soon on a contract; there was a lot of it last season.  I think everyone gets the sense that Getzlaf is a good bet to re-sign with the Ducks, the jury is very much out on Corey Perry.

Another similar opinion.

Read somewhere else that the Ducks met with Bobby Ryan and have told him they want to keep him - not trade him.

without Getzlaf, the available UFAs for center looks thin in terms of a #1 center

Unfortunately, the market for #1 center is always thin.  Maybe there is 1 guy. Maybe there isn't.

If they can get Perry unrestricted ( or more of a bargain rate trade as a pending ufa ) perhaps it frees up some chips for a trade to upgrade at centre?

No doubt, there would have to be a top 6 winger leaving town if we managed to get Perry here.
