Goaltending conundrum

Team play and the goaltending are feeding off each other and are both to blame.  Bad team play results in more scoring opportunities for the opposing teams.  When the opposing team scores, the team loses confidence in themselves and the goalie.  This results in the goalie facing more shots than normal.

Improve the team play and system in front of the goalie and the goalie will not have to face 30+ shots every night which is unacceptable.  If the goalie lets in bad goals even with an improved system, it is the goalie's fault alone.

The hilarious part is Scrivens is 2-0 when he sees over 35+ shots a game...

mirtle: Wilson on who will start in goal tomorrow: "A goalie. He'll be wearing two pads. A mask. Probably with a Leafs logo on it. How's that?"

I'm glad to see those smarmy, feel-good, Ron-Wilson-is-actually-a-nice-guy interviews haven't robbed him of his ability to be a bitch!

sportsnetbroph: The Toronto Maple Leafs have made contact with veteran goalie Marty Turco. He has been working out with the Soo Greyhounds.

Goody goody.  Another goalie the Leafs defensive system can damage and destroy.

@felixpotvin Chemmy
"But what happened? We had a regular-ish goaltender and we won a ton of games. Now we lose a lot. Maybe it's the defense."

Even if he stopped the puck no better than Gus, he'd probably be an upgrade because the guy can really move the puck.

Having said that, if the Leafs are really making inquiries (while Brophy's not the most unreliable media guy), it may suggest they're in trouble with expecting Reimer back any time soon. That would be bad news.

Even if Reimer comes back sooner rather then later, signing Turco might not be an awful idea anyway. It could be the Goose is cooked (sorry, couldn't resist :D) and the Leafs feel Scrivens needs more time in the "A." Moreover, what harm would the added tutelage be to Reimer and the other keepers in our system be?

Agreed. I said pretty much the same thing a week or so ago. I can't help but think that the Leafs are really trying to get Nabokov, but they're being gouged by San Jose on the price. Maybe Turco is option #2, or a bluff to get the Sharks to move Nabokov for less than the purported 2nd they want. I'm just guessing of course. Maybe it is Turco they want. But with Wilson's ties with Nabby, I don't think so.

Or that they feel, even with Reimer back, they need an upgrade on Gustavsson as the back up and don't feel Scrivens is it/is ready to be it/is best served as it.

Turco hasn't spoken to Leafs himself, team just asked his agent some questions. Turco says playing for the Leafs would be a dream come true.

All over-the-hill superstars say it's a dream come true to play for the Leafs.

The dream, unfortunately, is "I wish I could get a contract again" not "I wish I could play for the Leafs when I'm in the prime of my career" dream.  :-[

Well it's frustrating when the soup of the day is either "Fire Wilson" or "OUR D SUCKS!"
