Goaltending conundrum

Fanatic said:
I like seeing that Scrivens has a bit of an agressive streak in him. I like him coming out of the net and challenging shooters (both in the game and the shootout), I like that slapping stick sweep he pulled earlier in the game around his net and I like the take down late in OT.

The "8-foot Billy Smith poke check" was very nice.

Even with Scriven's stellar play here, unless Reimer is less than 10 days/2 weeks away, I still think we need to make a deal for a back-up.

Thought this was the most relevant place to post this.

ChrisBottaNHL: Know this: Nabokov dying to leave, making no secret about it. Family still in CA. #Isles dying to get down to 2 goalies.

4th round pick for him and he will be ours, book it.

After the last game I don't think we'll trade for him. We'll ride Scrivens until Reimer gets back.

Interesting to note though, is that Reimer's numbers are really being buoyed by his shutout. He had a great game against Calgary but has been below average in the rest of the games he's played according to SV%. Hopefully we can really rally around him when he returns.

It's a small sample.  I mean his numbers are dragged way down by the bad Sens game too with those 5 goals in the 3rd.  If you take away his best game, and worst game, the other 3 games have a combined save % of .906

He needs to get back and get a bunch of games in before we can start talking about his numbers.

Oh yeah, for sure. But just watching him he doesn't look like the same world beater like he was last year. Last year it was like he was sprinkled with magic dust or something. He's looked decent, if average this year.

He also didn't start the season as a Leaf last year. Magic dust aside, Maybe he's just a slow starter.

Interesting piece from Mirtle dated Sept. 19 of this year...
Scrivens has a role model in Reimer
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/leafs-beat/scrivens-has-a-role-model-in-reimer/article2172170/

"... Ben Scrivens is hoping he can write a similar Cinderella story." - to that of Reimer... ?What Reims did last year was a big confidence boost for me,? Scrivens said. ?It shows that anything really can happen.?

Figured I'd bump this over from today's GDT...

Rout tonight for the Leafs.  Scrivens with the Shutout in a 5-0 win.  Scrivens drops his GAA to 2.47 and Save % improves to .919 in the process and all this talk about trading for a vet backup is put to rest.

It's like this look at what Giguere did for the Leafs, look at how well he has looked for Colorado.  The Leafs are horrible defensively and any washed up vet like Turco or Nabokov will fair no better then Scrivens or even Gus unless this teams tightens up in their own end.

Okay, say Scrivens continues to shine. Great. That's what we all want. Then what? We'd still only have (for now) just one dependable 'keeper. Does anyone really know when Reimer will be back and how long he'll take to get in to the grove? Personally, I think given the relatively small price a vet back-up will cost, keeping our eyes out for one is still probably a good idea. - Just me.

Now having said that, I was a proponent of looking for more of a 1A as opposed to a back-up a short time ago and still might be... I want to see more of what Scrivens can do before I really know for sure.

The guys bandied about though will not stabilize things. If the Leafs can get a guy like Harding sure but why would Minny give a guy like that away and the cost to acquire a player like that when really we still feel like Reimer is our main man would be too much to give up.  There simply are just not any options out there that can be had on the cheap that would be better then what we have.

Lets face it Scrivens has looked absolutely outstanding in 2 of his 3 starts.  The Leafs game was absolutely  atrocious in all 3 of those starts and to be honest I can't see how any top goalies in the league wold have done any better then what Scrivens did.  This from a rookie with all the pressure of Leafs Nation thrown onto his shoulders.  A team in love with Reimer, a team off to a fast start who are starving for a playoff birth. Talk about being thrown to the wolves.  I am quite impressed with what Scrivens has done and I am more then comfortable giving him a string of games much like we did Reimer last year until of course Reimer returns.

... and just run with Gus as the back-up? That's the part that scares me. What if Scrivens isn't the real deal and/or goes down?

Well I can't see an aging Turco or Nabokov being able to do the job any better.  Gus isn't as bad as the Leafs d has made him look. The last half dozen games or so have been just terrible and I liken it to the bad spell we had the last two seasons.  We just are lucky to have come out of it in pretty good shape this time around.  Scrivens stole 2 of those games and some bad goaltending on the other side of the fence has also helped our cause.

Mark Owuya in four games GAA 1.52 Save % 0.939

Not saying he should be recalled as I fully believe we need to let Scrivens have a series of starts.  However, it certainly is nice to see that this kid has played lights out for the Marlies since Scrivens has been recalled.

Rynnas is pulling a Gustavsson for the Marlies right now...

Yeah... Rynnas started last year looking like he was the next one to come up. He was outplaying Scrivens and looking like the guy to supplant Gus until the wheels came off and Scrivens took over the Marlies.
