Goaltending conundrum

It shouldn't have been a complete surprise that Pogge didn't pan out. It happens often with goalies who star at the World Juniors (see: Kidd, Trevor).

What surprised me was how quickly Burke pulled the pin on Pogge and traded him (at his lowest value) for basically nothing. I couldn't help thinking there was more to it than we ever knew.

Or that's just conspiracy-like thinking......

It doesn't surprise me at all, generally people a gm inherits instead of acquiring themselves have a much shorter leash.

Sample size is too small to really say without scouting the two extensively.

I agree. Unfortunately sometimes decisions have to be made using small sample sizes. You just have to hope they dont always turn out like the Pogge-Rask debacle.

I can pretty much guarantee that a decision concerning Rynnas from the Leafs brass would not be made based on that data alone, so no, they really don't.

What roster decisions are based on a goalies stats alone? You lost me.

Sign Biron, to a one year contract. Work either Reimer or Scrivens in  to 25-30 games. Unless vancouver is going to take a contract mike Connely or Komi, stay away from Lou!!

I don't really know anything specific about what happened, but from observation I think all the attention and fanfare around his arrival in Toronto really went to his head.  Goalies are sooooo fragile when it comes to building and maintaining their confidence, any artificial ego inflating is not a good thing.  And in his case it was ridiculous.

In short, "we" broke him.

Yes, as always it's the fans to blame....... ;)

It's in reply to the bolded above, you agreed with Potvin but then said otherwise.

Didn't that happen with Kadri also - head got all swollen / assumed he was a lock for the team in '09-'10?

From what I understand, Kadri has always had a swollen head.  It was part of his problem in Junior.  However, another player that was in Burkes organization also had a swollen head, and also came from the London Knights.  That young man was Corey Perry.  I believe that some credit Burke to straightening him out a bit.

I think your taking my response out of context or adding your own context, but o.k...

Clemmensen? Anyone?... Anyone?

Given that he turns 35 next month and has never established himself as a starter, he is not the answer.  He has had a hard time sticking in the NHL as a backup, including his less than memorable time with the Leafs in 2007-08.

Yeah I agree he's a career backup at best.

Assuming we have no real intention of making the playoffs, sure.

I'm struggling to come up with a huge list of who fits the mold of the "vet" that Burke says he's looking for though. Biron, Clemmensen, a couple other less that thrilling names...

Huet is a UFA this summer and is more appealing than Clemmensen. On top of that, there's always potential trade options out there.

I really don't have much of an opinion of Huet right now (I'd need to do some reading) but yeah, he fits the "vet" description too. I know there might be some trade options out there but other than Luongo, who's got a "vet" to spare? Hiller maybe? I mean, there are some unproven guys I like but apart from that, any names you'd like to throw into the mix that fits the "vet" mold?  Theodore maybe?  :-\

Just put Reimer and Scrivens in there...I like our chances.

That's a big risk to take. If it doesn't work Leafs are in an even worse situation next summer.
The problem I see with Luongo besides the long contract...like someone mentioned in another thread, his confidence is a bit shakey and once the booing starts...what then.
