Goaltending Showdown - Reimer vs. Bernier

I feel a little bad for Reimer - he needs a few games to get going, but with the way Carlyle's playing him, it's just not gonna happen.

Didn't Reimer started a few in a row when Bernier was nursing an injury? I'm also pretty sure that the last game resulted in 3 goals against on 12 shots and Reimer being pulled.

Sure, but you can't expect him to be perfect, or get near-perfect after 3 games every time.  That's the only time he's played 3 in a row this season.

So when a guy lays an egg and the other guy comes on to not only win that game for you, but puts you on a 'streak' playing fantastic, the other guy should be given another shot?

I'm not saying anything even close to that, and I have no idea where you thought I said that.  All I'm saying is that Reimer hasn't really had an opportunity to get going the way he can. Bernier has had bad stretches too, but would go right back out after 1 or 2 games by Reimer.

And my point is, Reimer had an opportunity. He could of stolen the net from Bernier and never gave it back. He didn't. He'll get another opportunity....it just won't be right now as Bernier has done what Reimer failed to do in early December

Never sure what to make of Dreger. His 'analysis' is beyond useless, but, as a weather reporter for what the management likely thinks, I guess he's pretty reliable. On Reimer:

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke 2h
Dreger "at the moment it's obvious that Carlyle is more comfortable with Bernier. Overall that's a good assessment"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke 2h
Dreger "Carlyle has been incredibly fair to both goalies"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke 2h
Deger "anyone that watches the Leafs could see Reimer's game had been slipping. It had been slipping even before getting yanked against Det"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke 2h
Dreger "I'm sure Carlyle and Reimer's teammates could see how his game had been slipping"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke 2h
Dreger "no doubt in my mind that Carlyle has anointed Bernier has his #1 right now"

I wouldn't say he's been "slipping" as much as he'd cold right now. Bernier's numbers have been good to great in his last six games so obviously you go with Bernier right now.

It's not an entirely unfair statement to say that Reimer hasn't been great.  In 12 games over November/December he has a .913 SV%.  Granted I think he got hurt but Carlyle having a short fuse for pulling Reimer vs. Bernier a bit but his play hasn't been dominant in the least.  Over the same stretch Bernier has a .930 SV% in 19 games.

Bernier has played better.  I think some of it is Reimer having to deal with long gaps between his play but I'm starting to think Carlyle is doing the right thing.  I like Reimer, but I think the team will be better off with a #1 (50+ starts) #2 (30 or fewer) combination.

I don't have the the most optimistic personality, but even I can't get too worked up about this anymore.  I have a big soft spot for Reimer, but the way I see it, one of two things is going to happen: Either Bernier plays amazing games for the rest of the season (yay!) or Reimer eventually gets some more chances to shine (also yay).  Probably the latter, so he'll just have to be patient.

As a fan, you just have to enjoy this tandem while it lasts.

Even though Bernier can't be completely blamed for the 7-1 drubbing by the Rangers, it will say a lot if Reimer doesn't start the game tomorrow.

James Mirtle? ‏@mirtle 1h
Carlyle on Bernier's mindset: "When you?re bucked off the horse, I?m sure every cowboy wants to get back and ride that same horse."

Yup. Bernier starting tomorrow pretty much ends the debate IMO.

That throws the 'win and you're in' plan so far out the window, it's hurdling into space. Unless Bernier gets injured, Reimer is and will be the back up goaltender. Showdown OVER!!

Until Carlyle is fired, at least.

I don't understand the point of keeping Reimer if he's not going to play. IMO both goalies have been very good on a terrible defensive team (the edge to Bernier perhaps) but to keep with Bernier after a 5 goal drubbing (not unlike Reimer's last start) doesn't make much sense to me.

At this point (with Bernier looking like he'll start his 6th in a row) I'd imagine Reimer's value to the team is larger returning a productive, responsible defensive forward or good 3-4 D-man than playing every 6th game or in back-to-back situations.

This team has too many holes to keep a productive piece on the bench most nights. Just my opinion of course.

It's certainly a valid point, and one that may very well be addressed before the deadline. I'm guessing they'll see how well Gleason plays, and either make a trade for another d-man, or perhaps a number 2 centreman.

Agreed, but how many of those make under $2m/year? There's not much the Leafs can do about upgrading until the cap goes up. And who knows what value Reimer will by then.

I agree with this.  I've been having a gut feeling that Reimer will be traded before the Olympic break.  I think using him as a piece to improve a roster close to slipping out of a playoff spot is more important than holding onto him for insurance purposes.  This goalie system has just about run its course and now would be a good time to capitalize on the one area of strength.
