Brian Burke, President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Tuesday that the hockey club has agreed to terms on a five-year contract with forward Mikhail Grabovski. As per club policy, financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"We are extremely pleased to have Mikhail under contract for the next five seasons,? said Burke. ?His speed and skill are valuable commodities and fit perfectly with our style of play. He leads by example and his work ethic speaks for itself."

Grabovski, 28, has registered 45 points (20 goals, 25 assists), a plus-seven (+7) rating and 18 penalty minutes in 59 games with the Maple Leafs this season. The 5-11, 183-pound centreman currently ranks first on Toronto in plus/minus and third in goals and points in 2011-12, and he was named the NHL?s First Star of the Week for the period ending January 30.

I honestly didn't think either side would go to 5 years.  Grabovski has really come into his own and is a big part moving forward.  Like this signing.  Will like it even more if it's under $5M, and closer to $4.5M.

Probably went for the extra year for lower overall cap hit.  We'll see.

mirtle: Grabovsksi signs his five-year extension. Term had been hang up, but Leafs didn't want to budge from five.

No "extra" year here.

I suspect the math when it's revealed may make some of us a little ill. But if they wanted a shot at the playoffs next year, it was an important signing. Grabbo makes that second line go and it almost serves as a 1B if Kulemin can rediscover his game.

UFA centers are really hard to come by so I'm sure they had to pay a premium. If Burke managed to keep it under $5 mil, I'd say he did pretty well under the circumstances. Hopefully, the energizer bunny can keep it up for five years.

Damn he wanted more than 5?

YAY!!!!!

If the deal is less then a 5 mill cap hit, that is a bargain.  Grabs would have been given much more on the open market.  Kudos to Grabs for staying loyal and kudos to Burke for keeping him, one of my favs.

Mirtle:

Grabovski's deal is for $27.5-million over five years, or a cap hit of $5.5-million. Puts him bit higher than likes of Plekanec, Krejci, etc

Friedman:
Seeing I'm in the minority on this one, but I think it's fair. What's it going to cost to replace him in a market w/few centres? Also, Carlyle is going to play him...a lot.

Yup, they totally weren't willing to give him $5M+, right?

Are you prepared to give Lupul and Kessel $7M now?  Leafs have made Grabovski their highest paid forward next season.
