Sure 2-3 years away always looks good..then over the next 1-2 almost everybody worth getting renews where they are and there is frenzy to overpay for the ones that are left. UFA market is dead you are kidding yourself looking at that list.

I know, just don't crush my dream so quickly, let me live in the clouds a bit. :(

Unless Carlyle can take this group of players (with the inevitable tinkering in the offseason through trades/promotions from Marlies) and make them a winner, the future is looking bleak.

Tank and draft Grigorenko.

That's a tall order looking at Edmonton and Montreal's point totals right now.  With Carlyle in I can see the Leafs starting to win games down the stretch (maybe have a good final 10 of the year).  We're not going to finish 2nd last overall.

I know but if you acquire a Top 5 pick ( Leafs currently hold 7th overall, will hold 6th with today's loss and NYI winning) then maybe you can trade a guy like Schenn (or Gunnarson) and that pick for 2nd overall.

I suppose so.  Man this is the summer I'm least looking forward to as a Leafs fan.  What a letdown this season has been after such a good start.

Is either of the top 2 guys considered elite, franchise type players?

As per Bob Mackenzie:

If Yakupov and Grigorenko were to go one-two on draft day, it would reprise the 2004 NHL draft when Washington took Alexander Ovechkin first overall and the Pittsburgh Penguins made Malkin the second selection.

The similarities between 2012 and 2004 are striking.

Yakupov, like Ovechkin, is a dynamic, game-breaking goal-scoring winger who isn't afraid to get physical or get his nose dirty going to the hard areas to put the puck in the net.

Grigorenko is a big, offensively-gifted playmaking and goal-scoring centre who shares many of the same traits as Malkin.
I thought I read not long ago that some scouts were pretty down on Grigs because of his lack of compete against good teams, apparently he tears it up against weaker teams and dissapears against good teams. Not exactly the kind of guy I'd be all that excited drafting at #2, I think I'd go for Ryan Murray instead, god knows we could use the help on D.

Does anyone really think that the player the Leafs draft can get in the line up next season and be an impact player? I have my doubts that Burke is relying on the draft to help fix this current roster. Drafted players usually take 2-3 years before they are useful to the big club. As we all know Burke's plan calls for a much quicker fix then that.

It's been so much fun being terrible for five (eight?) years and not even getting to experience the excitement of drafting a young potential superstar early.

Middle of the pack for life, baby!

Did anyone hear Bobcat speculating on air about the possibility of Burke wheeling a signed Grabovski before his NTC actually kicks in.  Would be a tad scummy, but got me thinking what a great piece he'd be in a Nash deal since I'm sure CLB has a rough time getting talent to commit there long term.

Of the 3 teams most likely to drop to #1-2 in the draft, only Edmonton would be willing to give up the chance to pick a franchise player for a d-man and a lower pick.  Not a chance you pull that pick away from Montreal or Columbus.  Not a chance.

Leafs could get lucky for once and win the lottery draft. I am big fan of Grigorenko.

Seems like a great example of why he's a radio guy and not a gm.

Bingo... and why his ability to understand hockey continues to be really weak at best.

Luck would be nice for a change, and yeah Grigorenko looks like he's going to be a beast.  I think the Malkin comparison isn't overdone.  Filip Foresberg is another very good looking option.  He may need a few extra years to develop.

edit: Grigorenko reminds me of Stamkos at times as well.

I highly doubt Columbus would do that after the problems they had with Carter this year under the same circumstances.
