Grabovski re-signs

Seems about what his market value would have been - no discount which is a little surprising given the length of the deal.

Given how bad the fa market at the position will be this year I think there's a good chance he could have done better if he would've went that way, fwiw.

Well, I said in the other thread that if they'd agreed at five per but were off on term then Burke would either have to bend on years or average value and it seems he did on the value.

Decent enough deal but, as always, tough to get a read on right now.

Yeah and given the Leafs have no other options at 2nd line center they were over a barrel.  Hopefully he continues to play better and makes the detractors like myself eat their words.  I'd be over the moon if he could take his game to another level and the $5.5M looks like a deal in a few years.

Would it have been nice to get a 'home town'/contender discount and get him for 4.5?  Sure but the reality is that we're not a contender yet.

For what it's worth, I think there's good reason to think that Toronto did get a bit of a discount. The issue is you have to look at the total dollars rather than the AAV. I think a player is bound to care more about the total value because of the way he can structure a deal to get a big chunk of money upfront.

Grabo's deal is only 500,000 more than Ville Leino's despite having a significantly better record of production and being a centre. I don't think there's any doubt he could have gotten 30+ million on the open market.

I work, so reading 9 pages of tmlfans analysis isn't an option right now...... sorry if this is redundant but I looked at cap geek and it says 5.5 million/year for 5 years.  Sounds like a lot to me but I am sure he would get that much as a UFA.  It is too bad we got no discount.  It will be very hard for Grabbo to make that a good price-performance contract, but I don't see another way to get Grabbo's performance ... at least until Getzlaf is available.

Seems a little high, but not outrageous given the comparables, as long as he keeps in production in the 65-70 point range.

Grabbo at $500k over what most thought the max was is OK with
me. You can point out some significant overpaid players by millions.

All indications are is that Grabbo is a heck of a heart and soul guy. Those
ones I'd worry least about overpaying.

Although I felt they could have got him signed for 5 per. I still think they needed to sign him. He's probably not a #1 center but makes a good #2. If he walked I think they would have had a hard time replacing him. As far as points and some criticizing his production. Let's look at a couple things. First he missed some games. Secondly his line was ineffective at the beginning of the year and broken up from time to time. Mac struggled and Kuli has had a rough season. Thirdly he doesn't get top minutes on the PP. Lupul has 20 PP points, Kessel 17 on the PP. Grabs has 9. Finally his ice time per game is about 2 minutes less than Lupul or Kessel. If you switched Grabs with Bozak I don't think we would be discussing his contract to the extent we are today. His numbers would be pretty comparable to the top 2. All this and not even going to mention what he brings game in game out. Hopefully that continues now that he has his new contract.

To "keep" producing in a particular range, one must actually have produced in that range.

That being said, I can see Grabbo hitting those numbers as a 1st line centre- presuming, of course, the Leafs can acquire a bonafide 2nd line one.

A 60 point player who is easily the best defensive forward on the team is certainly worth 5.5 mil. Reading some of the comments in this thread shows how underrated grabbo is.

mirtle: The last two seasons, Grabovski is tied in points per game with Franzen, Hartnell, Havlat, Jokinen, Moulson, Neal and J. Staal.

PPP also had a good write up that Grabbo is our best forward based on a number of advanced metrics

Pretty dumb to compare with a bunch of great contracts, most of which were signed years ago and some while the recipients were RFAs, as they are doing now on TV.

You don't land a UFA, and that is basically what Grabbo was with some bias towards staying, at Getzlaf-type rates. You pay according to the market. Get back to us on these comparisons after those stars sign their UFA deals.

DownGoesBrown: ?I?m shocked that a guy who just signed a contract now makes more than someone who signed years ago!? ? People who need to think harder.

I'm happy for Grabovski. He had Burke right where he wanted him. Without another scoring streak (or two) for Grabovski, the Leafs chances for the playoffs drop off the map and Burke's job security takes another blow. Maybe the final one.

Burke's probably washing Grabovski's socks for the remainder of the season too.
