Grabovski re-signs

Wow, that's an overpayment if I ever saw one. You really are not setting yourself up well when Lupul's and Kessel's contracts expire.

Lupul's and Kessel's next contracts will be signed under a different CBA, which could drastically alter things. On top of that, prior to this season, Grabovski had set career highs that surpassed all of Lupul's and weren't significantly lower than Kessel's. Teams would have given him $6M+ this summer, as he would have been, by a significant margin, the best UFA centre available.

Grabovski's deal is for $27.5-million over five years, or a cap hit of $5.5-million. Puts him bit higher than likes of Plekanec, Krejci, etc

I like Grabbo, but bad Burke.  Bad.  Not from abilities or impact on the Leafs, but just that I was hoping they could get more of a discount for 5 years.

Are you prepared to give Lupul and Kessel $7M now?  Leafs have made Grabovski their highest paid forward next season.

Lupul won't get $7M unless he repeats these numbers next season and the new CBA isn't all that different from the current one. Same with Kessel.

With the comparable contracts Mirtle mentioned, I can't say it is out of whack.

The guy averaged 47 pts last three seasons. Unless he gets on fire he won't break 60 pts again.  He never has yet. If such a player is worth 6 million as UFA (around 10% cap hit !!!) then you simply walk away.

It made my day to hear that he is sticking around in the blue & white!  Grabovski is the heart and soul of the team in my opinion.

Wow, that's quite a pay raise. Is he even on pace to increase his numbers? Why would Burke do this, unless he really feels that he won't be able to find another, better center?

I fear this may prevent the team from being able to add a potential #1 centre that it desperately needs.  :-\

He won't reach 60 probably due to missing some games, but his 82 game pace this season is for 62.5 pts - an improvement on last season.  Last season, that would have been good for around 40th in league scoring, and 20th among centers.

A little high for my liking.  I would have loved $4.5M, and been real torn on $5M.  I'm definitely of the opinion $5.5M is too much but I guess that's the market.  I wouldn't want to lose him for a difference of $500K either.

Some comparables:

Plekanec makes $5, Krejci makes $5.25, Connolly makes $4.75, Fisher makes $4.2, Ribeiro makes $5, Carter $5.27, Leino $4.5, Dubinsky $4.2, Callahan $4.3, Umberger $4.6, etc etc

Around $5M is the market for the second line center position.  Given that all those contracts were signed previously when the cap was less than $60M (and it's assumed to be around $68M next year) it makes sense.

You are assuming those missing games would translate into points which is silly. He recently scored 2 goals, his first 2 in 15 games. He is known to get cold for long stretches.

Three 20+ goal, 45+ point seasons in the last 4. With the way the cap has gone up, that's what players with that type of production down the middle are paid. He's also one of the most defensively responsible forwards on the roster. I know you don't like the guy, but, well, you're so very wrong here.

Kessel's point totals have been going up each year and he's already been ahead of Grabovski.  I'll give you Lupul but he comes anywhere CLOSE to this year and he's getting $6+, Kessel will get $7 for sure as your top line winger and #1 goal scorer.  Burke should have let Grabovski walk at this price.

You are wrong, I like Grabovski's game a lot but not at this  salary.

No, I'm assuming based on the pace he has scored this season already that it will continue and he will end up with around 62 points.

Obviously it is not guaranteed, that's why it is a projection.  It takes into account his cold stretches and hot stretches.

Yes, his 82 game pace is 62.5 points, which would have eclipsed last season by a few points.

Well, let's hope he continues. I sure hope it's not one of those cases where the player doesn't continue the pace after the deal is done. I mean, I guess that happens to any player and I'll give Grabbo the benefit of the doubt, because he works hard, but I just feel it's a little high.

Maybe Burke should have broke his rule and signed the extra year?
