considering, at best, Penner holds zero trade value (and, more likely, would be seen as a negative).

Oh, I don't know. I was just thinking the other day that the team could deal with getting fatter and lazier.

According to Dreger, Burke was recently seen searching the dumpsters outside the ACC looking for Jeff O'Neill's phone #.

You only need to follow the path of abandoned burger joints to find Jeff.

Hockey central today were suggesting a Grabovski for Carter trade if a new contract can get done for Grabs by either team. That Carter contract would probably be the deal breaker though.

Wow Nik. Big Penner fan uh? ;)

He's making 4.25 million dollars and has five goals. Even without the work ethic questions and the inability to eat breakfast without hurting himself he's useless.

Hey now, who said the pancakes were breakfast?  If the guy likes breakfast for supper, I think we should give him a chance.

I hear ya. What the hell happened to this guy? I always consider the change of scenery element when you see a guy struggle in a new environment, but maybe he could turn it around with a move away from La La land.

But it's not like he tore it up in Edmonton either outside of one season. This was MacTavish's quote about him after a few years:

"When we signed Dustin we thought he'd be a top two-line player," MacTavish told the Edmonton Journal at the time. "We thought the contract ($4.25 million average for five years) was a starting point for him but he views it as a finish line. I can't watch it, certainly not for another 2? years."

He's a guy who had potential but hasn't been able to live up to it. Edmonton made him too rich, too soon. I could see the argument of signing him to the minimum in the off-season and see how he came to camp after coming face to face with his options in the summer and could be easily jettisoned but that's it. I understand the change of scenery idea but LA was supposed to be the change of scenery he needed.

If only there were a poorly edited picture to highlight all of this...

And you've watched exactly how many LA games to make this definitive assessment?

I genuinely have no idea how many Kings games I've watched this year. 10, maybe?

But, really, I could have watched none and known all I need to. His coach is calling him out as lazy, he's getting scratched, he's not putting the puck in the net and he's not being used in a defensive role.

I love the guy and he gives me this just on the verge of crazy vibe. I think he thinks he could challenge Chara in a fight and win kinda crazy. I hope he stays.

I get your point, but haven't you argued in the past that using hearsay, conjecture and subjective assessments to form an opinion is fraught with risk?  Don't you think it's remotely possible the coaches' comments (not sure which LA coach made them or what they said) were taken out of context or intended as motivation?  Didn't Wilson basically say the same thign about Kessel last year?

I don't know if I've ever said that exactly but if I did it's entirely irrelevant to what I'm saying here. Using Sutter or MacTavish's own words is not hearsay. Saying that Penner has only managed 5 goals this season is not conjecture. Whether or not he's being scratched is not a subjective assessment.

Those are stats, quotes from his coach and decisions being made by his coach. Those are absolutely ok as the basis of an argument.

This is probably a better question to ask after you know what is going on. Is it possible they were taken out of context? No. They're pretty clear. Were they intended as motivation? I'm sure they were. Sutter is probably intending to motivate Penner to stop playing like crap.

Again, this isn't an isolated incident with Penner and it's not just words. Other coaches have said similar things about Penner, he played his way out of Edmonton and Sutter isn't just urging him to get better with motivational words(and they're not that motivational) but he's actually putting Penner in the press box. There's not much wiggle room there.

No. Wilson never basically said that Kessel had to work harder if he wanted to get back into the lineup because Kessel was never out of the lineup.

Wilson was saying he needed more from Kessel.  Admittedly, until midway through last season, that "more" that he needed would be added onto the absolutely no defensive effort that Kessel was providing, but he still had his offensive game going for him with a 30+ goal pace.  Wilson called on him to play at least a little bit of a two way game.

Penner's "we need more from him" was more of a - we need you to do something, anything, to have a spot in the lineup.  MacT and LA have been calling on Penner to provide something other than awful play.

De-railing this thread it's kind of amazing that the Kings are presently in a play-off spot having only scored 124 goals and their top scorer at only 17.  Quick is on fire.

I can't believe he hasn't been getting as much Vezina talk as he has. That conversation seems to be dominated by Lundqvist and Rinne, but his stats are right up there.
