Grabovski - Under the Watchful Eye Of An Angel

Tuomo Ruutuu recently signed for a reported $4.75 over 4 years.  I realise he's a not a direct comparable, but I think that seems a reasonable rate for Grabovski.  I've read the reports of $5.5 / year, but that seems a bit out of touch given this signing.

I wonder if Burke is trying to line up and see if pieces fit before signing Grabo.  It would appear, from my ignorant perspective, that it shouldn't be a difficult contract to get together.

Not a bad comparison for a player.  Although I would say that in general, goals get a player more money than assists and Grabovski, has been the more consistent goal-scorer while being on pace for 3 20+ goal seasons in 4 years as a Leaf.  Grabovski is also a year younger.

I know Monday isn't a deadline built of titanium but... Tic Toc.  :-\

I say if he's not signed by Monday we'll trade him.

I think it happens before then.  I just don't see this as a real difficult contract to sign.  It brings to mind the Jose Bautista deal - he had the one breakout season and there was no consensus on what he was worth.  Well, after Grabovski's year in 2010-2011, I guess there was some uncertainty.  But after the way he's played this year, I think it's a lot easier to peg his worth.  maybe Burke doesn't want to pay it, but the market is saying he's worth $5M and probably $5M+.

To me, it looks like other options are being explored.  If Plan A comes through, Grabo's gone to Detroit on Monday.  If not, Plan B is sign him to a 4 year deal.

All indications are that Mikhail Grabkovski won't sign an extension with #leafs before Monday.

Don't want to lose him for nothing ... so I'd move him because if he's unsigned, then his cap hit demand must be pretty high. I'd guess they might get a low 1st round pick or comparable prospect for him.

Might as well give up on the playoffs if he's dealt, unless Connolly can step it up.

One school of thought is that the Leafs will retain Grabovski for the playoff drive. After that? Well, I guess thanks for the memories.

During the broadcast the other night someone claimed that Grabovski's camp was not close to a 5m per contract, not sure what they're asking but with the Ruutu and Hemsky signings, have to wonder.

If it's only, say, a .5 difference I think it would be worth it, if it's a lot more then that's a toughie, the markets pretty shy on centres.

Depends on what other moves, if any, are made. Honestly, though, if the Leafs lose tonight, they should probably consider selling. Add a few quality assets in order to take a run at some trades in the summer and actually address the team's needs.

I always hope for the best but I'm kind of indifferent for the playoffs. If they get in, they're going to be a low seed that's very likely to get quickly clobbered.

I wasn't a big Grabbo fan back when but he grew on me. I respect his effort and results. He's definitely one of their best forwards and he'll be a substantial loss. But I don't want to see him go for nothing in a season that is very likely amount to nothing substantial (though some progress has been made in improve the talent). I'd rather get something that might help their longer term cause if he's too hard to sign.

I think the return has to be significant, if it's a 2nd rounder and a B or C prospect, I'd be disappointed, these guys need to get playoff experience at some point.

I'd be doing that even if they won tonight.

Centers are hard to come by. I think he's worth more than a 2nd and a B or C prospect.

This would be much easier to take if Burke had landed Carter. I'm not going to be happy to see him go - even if they get a 1st rounder/good prospect. I'm just going along with it as he's unsigned and therefore, not going to be a great deal financially or they risk losing him for nothing.

To me it's like last year where Burke was pretty much a seller. I hope he has something up his sleeve, the Leafs could use a home run.

Maybe, but, a win tonight keeps them right on the edge of being in the playoffs, whereas a loss really puts them behind the 8 ball.

I think the club has fallen off in part because they're worried about being traded. How could a Leafs player not with Burke as their GM? I suspect they'll bounce back when the deadline passes.

Win tonight and lose the next game isn't a lot different than lose tonight and win the next game as even if they win both, it's not going to lead them to a Cup this season.

I'd cash in my chips for this season to improve the club for a cup run. A first round exit isn't going to excite me.

i can't lie, I'm pretty stoked about the possibility of playoffs. I'm confident they wouldn't get out of the first round, but I would love to see a few playoff games.

I am more concerned with the long term development of the team, so I'd be ok with a good return for him, but he's also my favourite player on the team. I'd prefer they keep him and land a true #1 centre.

I be tuned in and hoping against all reason for an upset.  :)

I would have been quite happy with Carter & Grabbo as their top 6 centers. I was quite down on Grabbo a couple of years ago but to follow last season with this one, I was impressed.
