Gustavsson

Scrivens > Gus

That's kind of premature, Scrivens hasn't played a real game yet. He might be better and a legit option at some point but he'll have to prove it.

I'm not sure what's going on with Goose but this was his second nhl game in what, 9 months? I'm not suggesting he gets a whole bunch of slack but I'd be more concerned about Reimer, fwiw.

He's definitely got the tools to be a top goalie but what is in question is his mindset. I'm sure most Leaf fans want him to get it together but wonder if he ever will.

Gus has looked very shakey. I thought Scrivens looked good in the preseason, better than Gus. If Reimer ends up sitting a game or two, i'd like to see Scrivens get a chance.

He's looked fine to me - held on to his rebounds this past game and made some tough saves.  Sure he could clean up his angles a bit, but he's only playing his first games now after a long lay-off.  Give him a chance.

IMHO Gus' problem is his mindset - Reimer & Scrivens have it, and Gus doesn't. I'm not sure that this can be taught and/or learned. Time is ticking on him to correct it.

EDIT: I didn't see Caveman's post above - I guess I'm not the only one thinking that way...

The only real criticism I have for Goose, is that he really needs to come out of his net on shots that come from his right side of the ice. He's been burned on more than two this season alone and if you check the reply, or game in an hour, he is totally not square to the shooter at all. Quality shooters are going to notice the gaping hole on his left side, glove side and shoot there.

Otherwise, I'm sure the Gustafsson on his rookie season will come back, as he has the athletic ability to make huge saves. Maybe Allaire is working too much on making him a blocking goalie and should let him be a bit more of a dynamic reaction goalie, because he can, we saw it in his first season. Maybe there is a combination of both there to find a happy medium?

My guess is that Scrivens comes in to back Gus in the next few games, with Reimer on the shelf and if Gus lets in a few weak goals , then Scrivens gets his shot. I really think Gus has these next 2 games to prove himself, and if he flops and Scrivens looks better it could very well be curtains for the Monster. It looks like we're about to see the battle for backup spot this week. It should make for a real interesting few games between the pipes. Can Scrivens steal the job?

Man the game tomorrow could get ugly like the Boston game. I like others have lost all faith in Gustavsson. I can only hope he proves me wrong.

Gustavsson starts tomorrow in Philly.

Fair enough. We were never going to get those two points anyway.

I'm don't have complete faith in Gustavsson just like some others, but why are people completely sold on Scrivens? I mean the guy was playing in the ECHL last year and people are acting like he is a sure bet.

I'm like many it seems - waiting for Scrivens to get his shot as I now
have seen Gus seem rattled every game. I don't think you could say that
he looked comfortable in the Habs game. His bobble of the puck in OT
is just another indication of his yips right now.

Having said that...with my desire for Scrivens...when the Leafs sent Gus down to the Marlies for the conditioning stint - he sported
a 1.14 GAA and .955 SP going 3-1-1 in his 5 games.

That's pretty impressive to say the least. Ben isn't doing that small sample size or not.

So you had faith in Goose but the last 5 periods has removed that somehow?

I had some hope that he could play well given that his injures should be behind him and Reimer is now the established #1 goalie. There was no pressure on Gustavsson to somehow step in and play a starting role. Given that he's had a full season in the league, worked with Allaire the entire time you would want to see progress in his play. I hate to say it but he actually looked BETTER when he first signed with the Leafs then he does now.

This is why I think that Allaire might have tweaked too much of his game. Now I'm not sure how much of his game he's messed with, because ultimately, Allaire has been working with this kid since he was much younger, mostly in the summers, but Goose is more of a blocking goalie now as I mentioned before and may be a bit uncomfortable in the net right now.

There is no doubt that, as people have mentioned, his struggles seem to be more between the ears, than his skill level. He's a talented guy, who has the ability to come out of his border line funk. I predict that the more he plays, the better his game will get, as he doesn't have to worry about his health as much anymore. I think it's just little things that he has to fix and more time in the net against NHL players in games will most likely help.

I still say that I think he can up his game.

When has he played a full season in the nhl? He might not look as sharp in some ways but that's a pretty small sample size for me, 5 periods of hockey. Like I said before if that's how we're treating it I think Reimer's play is more worrisome, fwiw.

Philly isn't unbeatable.  They're coming back to earth.  But with Gus I have no hope now for that game,

Thanks captain smurf!
