Gustavsson

So if Gus gets lit up like a Christmas tree on Monday will they keep him up as our backup or will Scrivens get the nod?

Whether it's fair or not as has been said Wilson won't have much of a fuse this year but I don't think one bad game would do it, not quite anyways.

The Leafs will go with Gus until the end of the year in the back-up spot. Even if he is terrible.

Gustavsson starts tomorrow in Philly.

Fair enough. We were never going to get those two points anyway.

Phili is coming down to earth.  Lost 3 of their last 4 with the win being over the Sens and Bryz has a sub .900sv%

So you're saying that they're due for a win?

So you had faith in Goose but the last 5 periods has removed that somehow?

I had some hope that he could play well given that his injures should be behind him and Reimer is now the established #1 goalie. There was no pressure on Gustavsson to somehow step in and play a starting role. Given that he's had a full season in the league, worked with Allaire the entire time you would want to see progress in his play. I hate to say it but he actually looked BETTER when he first signed with the Leafs then he does now.

When has he played a full season in the nhl? He might not look as sharp in some ways but that's a pretty small sample size for me, 5 periods of hockey. Like I said before if that's how we're treating it I think Reimer's play is more worrisome, fwiw.

He joined the Leafs 2 seasons ago. He's played in both seasons but injuries have prevented him from playing a heavy workload. Still he's been in and around the big club for a good chunk of the time, I would have hoped to see improvement from him but like I said he actually seems to be regressing.

That could also mean they're due for a breakout game like Boston had on Thursday.

You could try sending Gus to the Marlies again to "find his game". I know he'd have to clear waivers but I seriously doubt another team would bother to claim him.

The way Scrivens looked in preseason reminded me a lot of Reimer last year.

Well I respect your opinion but I think Reimer has 'regressed' given the same criteria. I don't think it's fair to say Goose is regressing after such a short return.

If he doesn't show some improvement ( because he hasn't been lights out either ) then fair enough but 5 periods isn't enough for me personally.

It sounds like Bobrovsky might be getting the start tomorrow.

Winnipeg had not scored any PP goals until they played the Leafs.

The Bruins had not scored an average of 2 goals per game until they met the Leafs.

I am sure Gustavsson can cure what is ailing Philly.

I would bet Columbus would claim him. They don't have a back up goalie right now.

I've stated zero confidence in Gus and stand by that comment but with that said, I'm not ready to give him away nor do I think that's where his value is. He still has upside I think. If we trade him, I'm fine with that but I'd want a return of some description and I think to expect one is still fair at this point.

No, they won't. They have Sanford, who is, at worst, a more experienced Gustavsson and could be back next week - and, considering their lack of cap room, they'll be sticking with what they have until they can shed some salary.

I doubt it. Unless Reimer is leading them to a clear playoff spot, the play of the Leafs' back up goalie could be the difference between making the post season or golfing  by the 2nd weekend in April. If Gustavsson doesn't look like a capable backup by mid-December, he will be replaced.

I don't think we'll ever know.

Wait, that was Gustavsson in the net last night against Montreal?  Wow, I thought it was the goalie cabby from the 90's that had his weak, weak glove hand exposed by Sergei Federov.

In all seriousness, I agree with the thinking that the biggest problem Gustavsson has is confidence.  I'm not sure when he lost it or why, but I hope he gets it back, because he has shown the ability make amazing saves, relying on his anticipation alone.  It's almost like when it's a clear shot on net, he just has too much time to think.

One other thing, why was his glove so low on Cammalleri's shot?  I thought the typical butterfly stance was to have your glove high, because you can drop it quicker than you can raise it.  On the replay though, his glove is down by his knee.
