Idiocracy

Bannon out, looks like the generals are taking over now, which is a whole other reason to worry.

To an extent, yeah, but, the current military leadership in the US has seen firsthand just how damaging getting involved in a conflict without a solid plan can be. They'll at least look at things from a strategic perspective rather than a xenophobic one or a reactionary one.

Easy guys, there's still plenty of racists in the White House.

They're missing Miller and Gorka.

So they are being run by the Washington Generals? And I guess 'facts and reason' are the Harlem Globetrotters?

And to me what's even more is I bet you most of these people haven't really ever met anyone jewish or have had any slight against them by anyone who is/was jewish. I don't understand it.

It's indoctrination. Based on what I've read about them, these groups tend to take on people on the fringes of society (for whatever the socio-economic reason), subsume their identities into the gang/cult and give them a sense of family and belonging that is what they actually wanted. In their eyes, it's not about hatred, it's about doing what they believe is right and good, and what resistance they face are the trials and tribulations faced by heroes.

It's not much different than religious or secular extremist groups. The ideology takes root as their foundational belief system (whatever it is, justified or otherwise) and our human minds are going to naturally defend those core tenets as a matter of survival.

Just like I said the other day we shouldn't think of racism as a binary state that only manifests itself at the extremes I wouldn't chalk up youtube comments just to members of any particular group. Reality is that prejudice and bigotry infect society throughout even amongst people who aren't indoctrinated in any particular fashion. Even anti-semitism which I'm sure decent non-Jewish people think of as being very marginal in an everyday sense still creeps in at the edges.

Just this last month Jay-Z released a song, a pretty good song, where he said "Ever wonder why Jewish people own all the property in America?". Now, I don't think anything particularly hateful was meant there but it's not like it caused some sort of loud and major reflection. Sure instances of actual anti-semetic violence or vandalism make the news and get condemned but it'd be naive not to think there's a more pernicious and less overt form of it that still manifests itself in society. Trust me as someone who is to some extent Jewish I frequently get reminders that my "otherness" exists even if it's is less obvious than it may be for someone with darker skin.

Personally, you know, I'm driven into progressive politics by a deep sense of what I think is right and fair but I'm also keenly aware that throughout history when things haven't been good economically for a large Christian majority blaming Jewish people has been a tried and tested way for the people actually running society to divert the attention of an angry mass. That's what happened in Germany, sure, and so it's most easily associated with Nazis but that happened in Europe for thousands of years beforehand and it still happens today. The stereotypes of Jewish people being insular or self-interested at the expense of others are ancient and thrive when there's a great deal of inequality.

That's really what I think we're seeing on the rise. We have a lot of angry young white men who are being faced with the reality that their life isn't going to be all supermodels and Ferraris and they look for someone to blame and while racial minorities always are involved in that it's very hard to blame black people or Latino immigrants for the existing power structure. Which is when you start hearing about a shadowy cabal of Jews who are somehow to blame for these guys not having girlfriends or money in their pockets.

I confess, this made me laugh.

Former white supremacist & neo-nazi tells his story of his years with these groups, how his second marriage to a half Jewish woman changed him, how he sought to change by becoming more religious/embracing core Christian values/Bible reading, and eschewing his wrongful beliefs, etc.,  and joining Life After Hate which further helped him make him more complete as a person.

He describes why people join these extreme radical groups and how the Trump election campaign gave renewed credence and legitimacy to this type of extremism.

"The message [Trump] was putting out during the election cycle absolutely parroted in a lot ways the message that we were putting out when we were Nazi skinheads trying to recruit people to that cause,? he said.

Leek?s old talking points included blaming immigrants for the problems of native-born Americans, pushing for the construction of a border wall and singling out Muslims.

?It was a thinly veiled appeal to that white nationalist sentiment. It?s something that I felt until recently was on the decline,? Leek said.

"It seemed to me that until the last 12 to 18 months that the movement had basically died,? he continued. ?At the most basic level, I think they?re being encouraged by what they?re seeing at the highest level of our government right now ? the president. He isn?t discouraging that type of behavior."

It?s been validated a lot through this whole campaign, but especially since the inauguration: our president?s inability to really come right out and say that it's wrong."

...he started seeing another woman from another country who had no connections to the skinhead scene. About a year into dating she met some of his biker skinhead friends. At that point, she told him that she was half Jewish and gave him an ultimatum: ?It?s me or them."

They got married five years later, and stayed together for another eight. During that time, Leek started to read the Bible and worked on improving himself. During his white supremacist years, he believed in the anti-Semitic theology of ?Christian Identity,? which had a tremendous influence on the racist right in the 1980s, but now he believes in the mainstream Christian values of love and compassion.

They eventually divorced. It was traumatic and painful...Leek reached out to former white supremacist Frank Meeink on Facebook after reading his book, ?Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead.? Meeink introduced him to a group called Life After Hate that fights racism and works to de-radicalize people in the violent far-right extremist movement. Through Life After Hate, he connected with other former racists who helped him see how he could embrace a new life and work to ?reverse the harm? he did in the past.

In Leek?s experience, these men have often gone through some kind of trauma and latch onto hateful movements to show the rest of the world that they have ?some kind of belonging and power.?

?These are frustrated young men, and they?re not being provided proper guidance to deal with their frustration,? Leek said. ?I think that when the administration is pointing its fingers at people outside the country and saying, ?Your problems are their fault? and targeting those people, it provides people [with] an example of how to act toward them. Rather than having it be stigmatized, they embrace it and run with it.?

He also delivered the official instructions for banning transgendered people in the military.

On the plus side, though, Gorka resigned/was fired but allowed to save face. So, it was only mostly bad.

The only thing I take away from that video is "the world's leader."

I'm getting so sick of hearing things like that or "the leader of the free world."

The Donald landed in Houston today to address the citizens and rescue efforts. His first words from atop a firetruck were, "Wow, what a crowd. What a turnout."

Someone really should have yelled "We have nowhere else to go!"

Between that and declaring Scott Pruitt famous now because of all the TV and interviews he is doing...
The Boy Blunder down there really is something special.
