It's also served to help them take control of the narrative in regard to the protest, and make it all about "disrespecting" the flag and the anthem, instead about racial inequalities and injustices it was actually about. The purpose of the protest has gotten so lost in all this discussion, which is unfortunately a win for the bad guys.

Yup. The important part of his POV is that, in spite of his disagreement with the style of protest, he absolutely recognizes and agrees with the right players like Kaepernik have to do so. There's a big difference between saying "I wouldn't do that" and "You shouldn't do that."
