Idiocracy

The Donald landed in Houston today to address the citizens and rescue efforts. His first words from atop a firetruck were, "Wow, what a crowd. What a turnout."

I need to correct myself here: Trump went to Corpus Christi, rather than Houston (where he doesn't have as many fans) and other hard-hit areas, ostensibly to avoid hindering relief efforts with the additional logistical requirements of dealing with a 71 year old toddler.

"One minute I'm a f______ white supremacist terrorist and the next minute I'm a f______ crybaby?" he asks. "I'm a g__d___ human being."

The cognitive dissonance is deafening.

Looking at what's currently happening in the United States you're sort of forced to conclude there are a group of people who think that kneeling during the National Anthem is deeply disrespectful to members of the military and veterans but a policy that will actually deport members of the military and veterans somehow isn't.

So the Republicans aren't even pretending to be Saturday morning cartoon villains anymore?

The latest health care bill they are submitting calls for lifting restrictions on health care insurance premiums.  Pre-existing conditions are fair game to jack up rates.  The other thing that is also going to be allowed in their new bills, adjusted premiums if you get sick.  So now your insurance means precisely nothing because when you get sick they can increase your premiums through the roof so that you can't afford your insurance.

Evil disgusting people.

And yet, somehow, they'll have a large portion of the people that need effective, affordable healthcare the most believing that this proposal will be better for them than the ACA.

I mean, I don't begrudge them pushing traditional conservative/Republican type policies - I don't agree with them, but, I don't think that necessarily inherently evil - but, at the very least, they should be open about it - this about tax cuts and corporate interests, not improved healthcare options or, really, anything else they might spin it to be.

But I think that's what is so ideologically bankrupt about modern day conservatism. Like you I'd understand, even if I vociferously disagreed with, the idea that simply Government shouldn't be involved with healthcare. That is, at the very least, a Libertarian/Conservative point of philosophy.

The problem is, that would murder them politically. Especially with the group of people in the United States that's, bizarrely, both their one most reliable voting block as well as the one folk who get the most socialized health care in the united states.

So instead they push things that I really don't think are conservative or libertarian but are just effectively cronyism. Passing laws that prevent states from negotiating bulk drug benefits or that enshrine really terrible healthcare for everyone who isn't a senior.

The President of the United States is getting universally clowned on by athletes today.

2017, folks!

Black guy who did an extremely American thing by silently protesting injustice? Son of a bitch who deserves to be fired.

Middle class white guys who march waving swatikas, using Nazi salutes and chants, while trying to protect a statue of someone who literally led an army in a war that tried to tear America apart over slavery? Very fine people.

Trump uninvited the Golden State Warriors to the White House because he's a racist pile of garbage.  This clown show really needs to end.

That, and because his fragile, racist, little boy ego couldn't handle a team of popular black men turning down his invitation. This was totally a "no, I disinvite you first!"

I've stayed out of this thread but I just have to say, Jesus Christ you guys are lucky to be Canadian.

Loving the response from the athletic community against this clown of a man....well aside from the Penguins organization who threw out the "we respect the office of the President" nonsense.

Yeah, I said it in the NHL thread but that was pretty disheartening. To me it's not about politics or even in this case whether or not the Penguins are going to the White House. It's that they felt the need to make an announcement that didn't even address the complete and total lack of dignity and respect the President showed to people in their profession.

Puck Daddy said it well:

Yeah, I'm not sure why they felt the need to support going.  They can go.  They have that right.  Much like Tim Thomas had a right to refuse to go for his "political" reasons.  I just don't know why they felt the need to announce that they are going.  Especially in the context of the NFL and NBA pretty pretty unified here.

And right on cue Trump tweets about their announcement as if it's an endorsement.

I guess the NHL needed some publicity given that NBC just confirmed that they won't be showing any national NHL games during the Olympics.  Not that that should be surprising.

On a completely unrelated note, are you allowed to bring Tiki torches into NHL games?
