What not to do on a 3 on 1 by Tyler Bozak and James Van Riemsdyk.

Yeah that was bad too. Not sure what Bozak was thinking going past the goal line. If he just stops before then JVR sets him up for a tap in.

I still don't get that. It looks like he tapped his stick, even if it was the glove, he got the shot off. He wasn't even hauled down. It should be two for slashing. That's the weakest penalty shot call ever ever seen in thirty years of watching hockey.

Shouldn't even be that. I'm not normally one to rag on the refs, but that was atrocious.

I'm not convinced Hunwick even touched Chimera on that one.

He did so little I'm actually willing to critique his defence on that play.

Yeah. If he legitimately tried to take him down, you could at least argue he was doing whatever he could to try to prevent a goal. It was like he waved his stick at Chimera because he's supposed to.

That's the sort of call that, quite frankly, needs explanation. That the NHL doesn't do that is bordering on negligent.

Andersen with an F you flourish on that glove save.

He might juts achieve MotM status for that.  It was an epic wank-off to the ref for the most bogus penalty shot call in the history of bogusity.

Exactly, the spirit of the penalty shot rule is that the guy is home free and tripped and slides into the goal. The referee then gives him the shot that was taken away from him for the infraction. I was under the impression if he managed to get some kind of shot off then or it wasn't completely home free then the referee would just give a two minute penalty.

This is the worst refereeing I've seen in years. That penalty shot call was outrageous. After that, I was thinking that there'd be some attempt at an even up soft call on NYI after they figured out how badly they botched it, but no, they ignore a blatant cross check on Kadri and instead call him for a marginal stick tap.

The crosscheck on Kadri should've been coincidental minors for crosscheck to Tavares and a dive for Kadri.

Tavares getting some Lebron treatment.

And I wonder what will happen after the scrum at the end there. I saw about 3 different opportunities to take an NYI player to the box for roughing, but by Reilly's reaction it woudn't surprise me to see Toronto a man down to start the 3rd.

The way the rules around penalty shots are qualified is that a play that would normally result in a 2 minute penalty has to take away a clear scoring chance - so, getting a weak shot off or not being hauled down, etc., wouldn't necessarily mean it's not a penalty shot. That play, on the other hand, wasn't even a penalty, and it definitely did not take away the scoring chance.

Exactly, that's what makes it even worse. Generally, if there's any doubt whatsoever, it's a minor penalty. The fact it wasn't even close to being a minor penalty really makes you wonder how the call could have been botched so badly.
