Jays closing in deal for David Price?

No details yet, but Jon Heymann is reporting the Jays are closing on a deal for Price. He's a pending free agent, so the value the Jays give up in this deal (should it happen) has to weighed against that. If they can lock him down to a long-term deal as part of the trade, that obviously changes things as well.

That would be pretty bananas. Especially considering that as you say he'd probably cost a fair amount and "getting him locked down" with the year's he's having and free agency looming could mean a long term deal at 25-30 million dollars annually.

Yeah, but, without a long-term deal, it's going to be pretty hard to justify the cost to acquire him if the Jays don't make the playoffs.

Oh I agree and, to be fair, if there's a pitcher out there you're going to sign long term to that sort of deal Price is about as good as any. I'm just saying it'd be a pretty huge decision for the future of the franchise.

Closing in on deal according to Morosi.

Dan Norris and Anthony Alford are rumoured to be part of the package heading to Detroit.

At this point I don't care. After this long...some segment will complain if they go for it or if they don't. Flags fly forever etc.

True, but with Buerhle and Dickey being free agents at the end of the season, and Norris looking like he's part of the deal . . .

I'm not super concerned about Alford. He's a pretty ordinary/replaceable looking prospect - gets on base well, but not much by way of power or speed, really. But, with Hoffman gone, moving Norris for a rental would be a pretty tough pill to swallow without it actually leading to some real success.

I have to be honest that I'm lukewarm on Norris.  Of the guys the Jays traded away in the last few years I was more bummed about losing Syndergaard and Hoffman.  If the Jays make the playoffs and re-sign Price I guess I'm going to be ok with this.  If they miss the playoffs and Price signs elsewhere this is a disaster that probably warrants a pink slip to the front office.

...? Signing him would still be big, right?

To be fair, if they miss the playoffs AA's a pretty longshot to keep his job regardless I think.

And as for "disaster" I mean, maybe? But like I said in the Tulo thread if the Jays want to start a quasi rebuild around Tulowitzki and Donaldson then you can trade Bautista/Encarnacion for I think some good pieces and hit a bit of a reset here.

According to Shi Davidi, it's a 3 for 1 deal. Norris is going to Detroit, but Alford is not.

EDIT: Jairo Labourt and Matt Boyd are the other 2 prospects heading to the Tigers.

Man, I know nothing about him but Matt Boyd was having a monster year.

Made a couple starts for the Jays earlier in the season - really good first start, horrendous second start.  IIRC, he's a lefty with good but not great stuff.

Yeah. His minor league numbers are excellent, and have been mostly that way since he joined the organization. He's a little older in prospect terms, but he could be someone the Jays will regret giving up.

I don't even think that's too bad really.

Apparently Detroit was offering 48-hour windows to negotiate with Price or something?  With AA stating he's not interested in rentals, I wonder if there is some sort of green light for him to throw the cheque book at Price and some degree of confidence that he could re-sign.

Stroman's already lobbying Price on Twitter for it at least!
