Jays closing in deal for David Price?

Daniel Norris revealed today that he is battling thyroid cancer. He found out about it earlier this year while still with the Jays but wanted to keep pitching more or less to keep his mind off of it.

Thoughts and prayers go out to him on a speedy recovery!

I really, really hope they do. I honestly don't care what the cost is. He comes back and I say the team is pretty much set for next season.

Hope the Jays sign him up.  He too brings his own unique brand of leadership and enthusiasm, being one of the Jays' leaders, along with Donaldson & Bautista, so it's important that he return.

Unless the Jays have other plans...

For the Cubs to back out citing costs is a pretty clear indication that Price is going to be pretty darned expensive.

Price is a great pitcher but if he's looking for something like 7 years and 245 million then ultimately I don't know if it's a simple answer.

I disagree this team with Price a whole season is World Series contender. Toronto fans want to support a contender if they start to go backwards the fans will jump off the band wagon as quick as they got on and we can go back to a 1/2 empty sky dome. Strike while the iron is hot. They will sell a lot season tickets if Price signs, this year and beyond.

I'm not doubting the short term benefits.

From a fan's point of view, I think it's simple. They already threw the future out the window last season. There's no reason to stop now. All it's going to cost is money, and maybe eventually someone's job. Not our concerns.

There is really only one path to take at this point, and that's to try and win. We'll have 22 years to analyze what they did wrong, but if there's a World Series or two to be nostalgic about in that period, I'm ok with it.

Except us not signing the checks doesn't make the reality of the team's budget disappear. If money weren't a concern, I'd want the Jays to sign Price and Greinke and Cueto to boot. Heck, Jason Heyward is better than Ben Revere. Bring him on board.

But money is a concern. And even if you believe that this team really only has a short term future then the best path is to figure out a way to keep the bulk of last year's team together while still fitting under whatever budget they have to work with. Giving what could be as much as 25% of the team's payroll to one player might not be the best way to do that.

With Rogers owning the team payroll  shouldn't be a concern at all.

Except that Rogers isn't just going to throw unlimited money at the team. That's not smart business on their part. They'll spend as much as they think they can before the team becomes unprofitable - or, since there's a good chance they're already unprofitable, before the team gets to the point where they cost more than the other benefits of owning them provide.

According to Jon Morosi of FoxSports, he calls David Price's returning to the Jays  "pretty remote."  He claims it has nothing to do with Price's dislike of the team, city, or organization, just that other teams may represent a more comfortable or favourable location for Price.  It will all depend of course on where Price wants his career to take him.

Toronto, according to Morosi, still remains in Price's favourite column.

Blue Jay fans, keep your fingers crossed!
