Justin Schultz

#Badgers D-man and former #Ducks draft pick Justin Schultz is expected to sign with a Canadien club #Leafs #Canucks or #Oilers

So, he's got the choice between playing with Gardiner his old D partner, or the other two teams, hmmmmmm. So he and Gardiner have talked that they'd like to play together some day, he's a free agent and the Leafs have Gardiner, I wonder where he signs this summer?

I don't know about these reports of him signing with a Canadian based team, but if Detroit is in the mix cause they want someone now that Lidstrom is gone, you can kiss Schultz goodbye.  They usually get the guys they want by pointing to their track record of success.

I think Shultz wants to play in the NHL next season, so Detroit may not be the place, as they like to take the slow approach with their players. Maybe they give it to him with the spots they have, but I'd still say they would have him in the AHL for at least one year.

The Leafs could lose out on him also, if they don't trade one or two of the guys they have on the team. In order for the Leafs to fit him in (provided he's ready) is trading Schenn or Franson.

Then, if everything works in our favour, you have this..

Liles- Phaneuf
Gunnarsson- Franson
Gardiner- Shultz
Holzer

Or something like that. Either way, a defenseman that plays the right side would have to go and maybe does anyway, with Holzer on the way also. Komisarek is also there, unfortunately.

I think there would be plenty of options to trade Schenn or Franson IF they signed Schultz.  Cross that bridge if they get there.

So I think teams are allowed to approach Schultz starting sunday.

Tweet from about a month ago:

tsnbobmckenzie Bob McKenzie
As an UFA on June 25, Schultz would be free to talk and negotiate with any NHL team but he can't officially sign a contract until July 1.

So that would be Monday.

Yeah. Not that it really matters. Unless his rights are traded (which, at this point, seems extremely unlikely - they don't hold any real value anymore), we won't know anything concrete until next Sunday. Basically, we'll get a week worth of slightly more intense rumours about him.

Maybe. I wonder if there's anything stopping a team from announcing they have a deal in principle with him though.

Probably nothing, I just have my doubts anything gets finalized in that period.

I do expect he'll be one of the (if not the) first UFA signings announced on the 1st, though.

I hope Gardiner invites him over for a BBQ on Tuesday night...

He is still subject to the rookie maximum right?

So money is not the issue. In Toronto he can play with his buddy and go to a team that has treated his buddy real well since being traded to it a year or so ago.

To think about Rielly, Gardiner, Schultz and Schenn being together for years to come is quite impressive. The Leafs have weaknesses to address, but the D looks solid for years to come and Schultz could really strengthen that core.

Without a doubt, one of them gets moved for help up front, Schultz coming or not.

That was prescient.

Don't forget Cody Franson. Still a kid and coming in this year with something to prove.

Honestly am I the only one who isn't buying the fact that Schultz can just step into the NHL and be awesome? I mean come on the guy won't sign with Anaheim even though without Visnovski he could probably crack the lineup but the guy needs room to develop. Scouting reports say he WILL BE a top four defenceman not he IS a top four defenseman.

Looking at other college free agents they didn't exactly hit the ground running. Bozak only had 27 points in 37 games his first year. Matt Gilroy was the top college free agent a couple of years ago and he completely failed to make an impact in the NHL. Why is everyone so certain Shultz will dominate? He wasn't even a first round pick, he went 48th overall.

He is probably better than Komi but then again I would rather play a pylon than Komisarek.

I don't remember anybody saying that he will dominate, only that he'll be a very good defenseman. The allure here is that he can play with Gardiner again, as they have talked about some day doing that very thing.

As far as him playing for Anaheim, he seems clear that he wants to play in Canada, so that right away excludes Anaheim as a destination.

People here have mentioned that he'll likely need some time in the AHL, maybe there's sort of an association with Gardiner's unusual rise?

I mean, maybe he does step right in but the AHL seems like the most probable place he'll start.

... hurm, can a rookie get a nmc?
