Justin Schultz

Looking at other college free agents they didn't exactly hit the ground running. Bozak only had 27 points in 37 games his first year. Matt Gilroy was the top college free agent a couple of years ago and he completely failed to make an impact in the NHL. Why is everyone so certain Shultz will dominate? He wasn't even a first round pick, he went 48th overall.

Neither Gilroy nor Bozak were drafted.  Also, Gilroy was already 25 when he came to the league.

Schultz is only a FA like they were because he didn't sign with the team that drafted him.

And he has higher expectations because scouts have liked what they've seen since he was drafted.  He's not a sure thing, but he's just like any other prospect, a risk that he'll translate.  But instead of having to wait a few years, teams can get him after finishing college now.

Besides I don't think anyone is saying he'll come in and dominate for sure right away:

?Anyone who thinks this kid is going to just jump in and be a top-four defenseman with no adjustment period, well, that?s just not the norm,? a scout said. ?I think he?s going to make the jump, but it might not be the prettiest jump.?

Both Schenn and Shultz are right side D-men, right? Hmmmmm.

The Leafs had to move a right-hander, whether it be for Shultz or Franson or whoever. We had too many of them, plus, I don't think Franson would feel too good about re-signing with the logjam we had.

Some interesting quotes from Gardiner about Schultz here.

Is he a Leaf yet?

While I think teams can talk to him today, he can't officially sign with a team until July 1st.  (that being said, I don't think an "unofficial" announcement is against the rules, per say).

Dreger was on TSN1050 this morning, though, and said he's convinced Schultz is going to a Western Conference team, though. :S

Dreger is solid. If that is what he says then I think he is headed for Edmonton. I hope not, but it makes sense.

I'm waiting to hear what Erndog says about this.  After his recent performance, he's the only one whose word I trust  ;)

If I'm Shultz, I choose the Oilers because I think I'd have the opportunity for the greatest personal success but who knows...

If I'm Shultz, I choose Toronto, just so I can hang with my good friend and go out on the town with him every off time.

Dreger was pure speculation on the fact that Schultz might feel he'd "fit in" with the young potential stars on the Oilers.  I don't think he has any sense which way Schultz will lean.

That thought crossed my mind (about fitting in with the youth.) But Toronto's a pretty young team too.

The awkward thing for Schultz coming to Toronto, is that he and Gardiner will be fighting for the same job.

Didn't they play together?  Or was that just as teammates and not defensive partners?

Considering that the money will be the same everywhere you have to assume that things like playing time will be a big deal. The Leafs are young but with a fairly crowded blue line.
