Matt Gilroy was the top college free agent a couple of years ago and he completely failed to make an impact in the NHL. Why is everyone so certain Shultz will dominate? He wasn't even a first round pick, he went 48th overall.
Neither Gilroy nor Bozak were drafted. Also, Gilroy was already 25 when he came to the league.
Schultz is only a FA like they were because he didn't sign with the team that drafted him.
And he has higher expectations because scouts have liked what they've seen since he was drafted. He's not a sure thing, but he's just like any other prospect, a risk that he'll translate. But instead of having to wait a few years, teams can get him after finishing college now.
Besides I don't think anyone is saying he'll come in and dominate for sure right away:
?Anyone who thinks this kid is going to just jump in and be a top-four defenseman with no adjustment period, well, that?s just not the norm,? a scout said. ?I think he?s going to make the jump, but it might not be the prettiest jump.?
