Kessel signs long term extension (8 yrs, 64M, 8M AAV)

No this isn`t taking him seriously.  Yes this is having a good chuckle.

"More than a few commentators and analysts suggested [Kessel] wasn?t the player a team could build around." - Damien Cox, March 14, 2014

"Burke can?t afford to insist that Kessel is a foundation player when he obviously is not, at least not for these Leafs" - Damien Cox, March 14, 2012

You could find more if you dig, but no use piling on.

Talk to his boss, he is an EXPERT

Crosby has a big lead in points, but if you only look at primary points he is only 1 point up on Kessel/Getzlaf: http://www.extraskater.com/players/standard?sort=p1

Secondary assists have proven to be pretty random and not a repeatable skill by and large: http://www.broadstreethockey.com/2011/3/15/2046512/simplify-scoring-drop-secondary-assists

So Crosby's lead is basically all due to his high secondary assist totals, while it's likely that him/Getzlaf/Kessel have had almost identical seasons production-wise on the basis of primary points (of course, Crosby is so good he's probably the exception, but fun to look at regardless).

Very interesting.

That's crazy.  I guess it's a combination of overplaying the 1st line due to not playing a 4th line, and getting outshot to hell, but still.  He has more points than those other four guys combined.

Puts his overall points total/rank into good perspective - it's tougher to score starting in your own end than elsewhere (Alain Vigneault famously gave the Sedins a ton of offensive zone starts and said as much) and Kessel has done that almost as much as anyone in the league.  And his closest comparables in d-zone starts are all defensive/third line guys.

One of the unfortunate elements of the Leafs punting their playoff chances so egregiously is that it might just about kill any support Kessel had of winning a bunch of Hart votes. I don't agree with the idea but there are a lot of people who won't vote for a MVP whose team didn't make the playoffs and Kessel, who I think has to otherwise be in the top 10, probably falls out accordingly.

If you mute the audio and watch Kessel you can pretty clearly see him mouth the words "You're a really terrible coach Randy" - clear as mud really.  I'd like to know who in the Leafs management forced HBO's hand to dub in some alternate voice-overs.  But I think it presents a clear issue with the coaching staff losing the room.

Indubitably.  The hilarity begins in the Phaneuf thread.  Prepare for side-splitting.

Kessel is arguably having one of the greatest seasons a Leaf has put together in the last 20 years.  He truly is one of the greatest Leafs I've ever seen (right up there with Dougie and Mats).  He is currently in 4th place in the entire league in scoring - absolutely unreal on a non playoff team.

That being said, the person who is 3rd in league scoring, just ahead of our Leaf star, is enough to make any Leaf fan drink...and drink often.

Yeah, that was interesting. I would have never guessed that, however, I would have guessed the high defensive zone starts for a lot of the Leafs on the team.

I wonder their number of offensive and defensive zone starts ranks league-wide.

Kessel until the collapse has played his guts out for this team. Perhaps the Olympics wore him and JVR out but I wish the damn Olympics had never happened or perhaps I do?as good changes are in the air.

It wasn't just the Olympics. Kessel and JvR ran out of gas trying to keep the Leafs offence afloat all season. When they really needed help, it was nowhere to be found.

Yeah. It was probably a bit of both, but I'm more of the opinion that the Olympics pulled them over the edge. They put every ounce of energy they had on the line for those games, then when they came back it quickly disappeared, until it was gone completely.

Yeah, I agree that they single handedly carried the offense for the Leafs facing the opposition's toughest d pairings and shut down forwards for 82 games straight but I also feel they gave it all at the Olympics as well since USA was favoured to compete for gold and they carried that team as well.

There was another coach complaining about it just before the Olympics started (in Chicago or Detroit maybe) that noted that the last Olympics exhausted his star players just as the NHL was heading into the stretch and playoffs.
