It's either going to be a fantastic deal if Woll can stay healthy, or a miserable one if he's a 20 game goalie who gets injured every time he goes cross crease.

It's a huge bet for a guy who's only played 36 games.  But what choice do they have?

Well the other choice is to just not extend him right now.

But they need some kind of solidity in the net going forward.  IIUC there are no other goalies available even as good as Sammy.

So we cant find a true #1 goalie so we'll pay our guy a salary that will make him a #1 goalie, problem solved lol.  3.66 millin per for a guy who was 12-11 with a .907%? really?

Valid point. But I think you have to really like Woll's poise when called upon in the biggest moments. I think the biggest fault to the signing is Woll's ability to stay in the net.

That is overlooking he had an arbitration option next summer.
The starter job is his to lose. If he has a decent season (more likely when it is handed to him to start the season), an arbitrator could award more than $3.66M. They're betting he's going to have a good season - which from a fan's point of view is not an entirely bad thing.

I think the deal was proposed because they wanted to establish Woll as the 1a, and not the 1b.  Bringing in Stollarz at 2.5m, and having Woll @ 900K on an expiring deal doesn't inspire the confidence they want Woll to feel in trying to take the next step, and it also looks like Stollarz is your 1a.

And if it doesn't work out, Stollarz gets more starts.

I like the move in at least trying to establish a hierarchy...initially anyway.
