Kessel traded to Penguins

So Kapanen is a Finnish born player still playing in FInland, 19 in July.  He also wears #42, so now Bozak REALLY needs to go.  Harrington is 22 and spent his junior years with the London Knights.

Anyone know much about either of these guys?

Playing alongside father and former NHLer Sami Kapanen in KalPa, Kasperi has overcome injury that kept him from competing for Finland at the 2014 World Junior Championship and remains high in the ranks simply because few possess his top-end puck handling ability. His game lacks physicality but his hockey sense, on-ice vision and playmaking skills are unparalleled and in a draft class with few game-breakers, Kapanen will be coveted. When attacking one-on-one, there are few players who are as dangerous as Kapanen.

Director of European Scouting, Goran Stubb:
?He?s a good-skating wing and can also play center. He has a smooth and surprisingly fast style that has surprised many unsuspecting defensemen. His tricky puck skills and quick release have paid off in many games and he has good hand-eye coordination. He?s not overly physical, but does not shy away from rough situations.?

Eh, I'm not thrilled with that return.  I'm not super high on Harrington.  Kapanen I kind of like (return of the Sami-Bot) and I would assume a late 1st.

Yes, it will be nice to revive the Samibot stuff.

If there is salary retention for 7 years and that's all they got, I'd rate this worse than anything Burke did.

Yeah... How many retained salary transactions can they have again? If it's 2, they've one left to move Phaneuf, Bozak, and Lupul. Good luck.

Seems like that's the deal.

TSNBobMcKenzie: TOR gets 1st round pick, Kapanen and Harrington for Kessel from PIT.

The market is the market. The team can't just frown at it and make it better.

Don't the Leafs still pay some of Gunnarsson's salary?

Thanks, Potvin.

As far as retaining salary, they can retain on 3 contracts, but let's hope it doesn't come to that.

No word on retaining some of his salary, or is the $2 million a given?

If there's no salary retained, while it's not a home run of a deal, it's not terrible all things considered. It's moving a big cap number, getting a high ceiling prospect and a 1st round pick, and clearing the slate.

Hold up.

DarrenDreger: Kessel trade could be bigger hearing Spaling involved and Pitt also gets Torontos 2nd round pick.

To be honest, I don't hate it.  I'll always want more but they're rebuilding and I really like Kapanen.  He's not Kessel but, the way the team is going, Kessel likely would have just been here for a few more years, scored a lot more goals, and been traded anyway before the team's had success.  I love Kessel but I kind of like this too.

Also someone mentioned on Twitter Kessel is probably going from the worst first line C to the best.

I am very happy that he is gone.

The return is better than I was expecting as of last Friday, so that is decent.

I think Phil will start the season with a bang and perhaps he will do well, but I won't lie, I am counting on him being a streaky scorer who sometimes thrills Pens fans and other times frustrates them. The Pens will eventually regret this.

Now, how about Phaneuf?  It seems really strange that the Leafs would even consider signing Franson, but talk it they are courting him.  Could a deal with Franson be contingent on trading Phaneuf?  I can't imagine they would want both of those players signed to long-term, big-dollar contracts.

Yeah, I

hope it's more than reported so far.

You and me both. But, lets face it, getting rid of that contract should be considered an asset as well.

Kapanen is going to be good. The first likely in the 26th range. Not that great, but I am happy he is gone.

Addition by subtraction

I'll be honest, as someone who roots for Crosby and the Pens as a general rule I'm actually pretty excited to see Phil get to play with a talented group and still get to cheer for him.

I never blamed him for the shortcomings of the organization and while I think he needed to go, I'm still pretty fond of him.

FriedgeHNIC: On TOR/PIT, when these teams talked last week, was a possible two-part deal, where TOR took a contract and gave back a pick. May still occur

DarrenDreger: Also told Toronto is eating between15-25% of Kessel contract.

Not a fan of this. That's 7 years of having $1.2M to $2M of dead cap space. They needed to get something more for that in my mind.
