Komarov wants back in....

caveman said:
Do the Leafs get any early advantage to negotiate? I thought no team could talk to him before July 1st.

As far as the NHL is concerned, he's a free agent. He can negotiate with any team in the league for a contract for next season right now. He just can't sign one for this season, and, he can't officially sign with anyone other than the Leafs before UFA season opens in the summer.

But agent Mark Gandler said if his client decides to return to North America as an unrestricted free agent, the Toronto Maple Leafs would receive the first opportunity to re-sign him.

?I have a feeling that we will be approached by a whole lot of teams,? Gandler said in a phone interview. ?I think there?s money out there, but we will talk to Leafs first, no question about it. We have a good relationship and nothing has changed.?

...

?We always had it in mind to talk again after the season,? Gandler said of the Leafs. ?They wanted Leo back, so it?s not like they snubbed Leo or anything like that. And they?re not upset with Leo and we?re not upset with them. Everything is good and we?ll definitely talk after the season.?

Ugh, Gandler's his agent?

I still don't really understand how there are a select few agents who are drastically more difficult to sign players than all others.    I understand that ultimately it comes down to teams needing talent and caving eventually, but it isn't like these guys deal exclusively with the upper echelon of players.  They have guys as clients who can be entirely replaceable and yet they still manage to gouge and gouge and get what they want.  It makes very little sense to me.

Komarov is a beast and would be a good addition to the team, but if his agent is the money grubber that you guys say he is and will try to milk the Leafs then I don't think it's going to work out.

He might be a really good 4th liner but those types should seldomly be paid a premium.

The problem with a guy like Komarov is if you don't sign him you definelty don't want the Sabres or Senators (not to mention other division rivals) to have him.  He is the kind of guy whom will definetly come back to haunt you?Or he could go West coast no problem.

Under the new cap I would give him $2mil x 4 years without much hesitation.  Yes he's a 4th liner but he brings a crazy amount of valuable skills to the table that most 4th liners do not.  I think he's worth more than McClement, and I would even let Jay walk in favor of signing Komarov, who can play centre as well.

I wouldn't worry much about what Gandler is saying. He's nuts but he also seems to give the Leafs a lot of positive credit. As long as Toronto is first in line to sign him I think it gets done.

I'd probably max out at 2.5/3 for him because he can play 3rd line too.

Also factor in his impressive performance in Russia and the Olympics means he'll likely have a lot of suitors.

yeah I'm fine with 2.5 as well... would go 4 years to get it done.  Leafs still have his rights until July 1 (or 5 or whatever day it is now) so they can work on this up until then, even if he can't play until next year.

Yep I want Komrade Komarov back being our agitator. Perhaps we can start to say goodbye to the dead weight on the team and U know whom I mean

You want Komarov to coach?

(: In all seriousness some of that effect is probably found in the locker room with him, I think he's generally considered to contribute positively within the leadership group.

It might take 2.5 to get him, I'm not quite sure what to think about that but I'd love to see his presence again with the Leafs.

I think the talk of him coming back to be a 4th liner is off-base. He has more skill and will be paid more than a 4th liner.

He couldn't score a goal to save his life during his NHL run, and he had a few opportunities.*

I like Komarov and hope he comes back, but he's got to be reasonable about it, financially.

*I'm not talking ice-time numbers or Corsi stats or whatever. I mean I actually witnessed him failing to put the puck in open nets, etc...

This is amazing:

He's also become the super villain of the league. Opposing fans dislike him so much that when Avangard Omsk renovated their arena, their fans requested he be painted on the stairs so they could step on him on the way to their seats.

Onto the "Komarov Rule" though. Unfortunately, this isn't a Sean Avery situation where he caused a bunch of trouble on the ice and the league had to make permanent changes to the rules after. I mean, we all know he causes trouble, but nothing like that has happened yet. No, this is a Dynamo Moscow internal policy.

See, Komarov really enjoyed his time with Toronto, going as far to call it the best year of his life. This isn't a shocker, with him expressing interest in returning to the National Hockey League next year and his agent saying that the Leafs would have first priority (he becomes a UFA this year). How much did he enjoy it?

Upon getting to Russia, Leo was proud to play for Dynamo Moscow, but he wasn't letting go of the season prior. Much like you'll see NHL players wear merch from other pro sports teams from time to time, Komarov opted to wear Leafs gear in all sorts of situations. The issue, of course, is that the Leafs happen to play the same sport.

So, in response, Dynamo Moscow told their players that NHL merchandise was not to be worn from this point on. This would solve the issue, if this story wasn't about one of the great hockey trolls of our time. Komarov's internal response? "Hey, I also played for the Toronto Marlies..."

my random theory of the week is we drop McClement and replace him with Komarov as 4th line C or LW fill-in when needed on the 3rd. Overpay him a bit at around $2-2.5 mil. Who cares. He's worth it in every other possible way except points.

What if he wants to make roughly what he does in the KHL?
