Plus another $3.5M to buy out that pesky little season remaining on his contract.

The only way to deal with next years money is to A) pay it to him or B) find another team who will. That's sort of the crux of the point.
nutman said:Its a risk some team may take in hope that he can help them. If he shows he has somthing left, next years money wont matter. and like I said I think he will have something to prove.

Really? Noble?
leafplasma said:By waiving his NMC he is giving the Leafs a chance to shed us of his salary and not have to even use up a compliance buy out on him for next season.

Yes noble, he didn't sign a NTC, he signed a NMC contract in good faith. He obviously did not want to sign a contract that would ever risk having him spend time on an AHL team. When you play 519 games as an NHL defenseman and you were a highly touted 1st round number 7 pick coming into this league it is a slap in the face to play in the AHL. By waiving his NMC he is giving the Leafs a chance to shed us of his salary and not have to even use up a compliance buy out on him for next season. That likely won't happen but I think in the jaded eyes of Komisarek he thinks it likely may happen. Do you seriously think playing 20 games for the Marlies is going to have any impact on whether he signs with an NHL team next season. So yes, it is very noble of him and PG I will get you a bucket.

Um, nope. It ain't. Even if you meant cap hit instead of salary it's still not the case.

Yes if somebody claims him it does, that is what I was getting at.

Right, but as you pointed out he doesn't have a NTC. The Leafs have always had an opportunity to trade him to another team and, let's be honest, they absolutely would have if they could but nobody wanted him.
Realistically, this decision was about being paid millions of dollars to play in the AHL vs. being paid millions of dollars to sit in the press box.
Jay-Mar said:What happens if Komisarek buys into Eakins philosophy down there and does a complete 360 and plays better than current Leafs? Do we bring him back up or still trade him? He was playing better this year until he was hurt.

Derk said:I wish that the Leafs wouldn't buy him out with just one season left on his contract if they could fit it in under the cap. It seems to me like a bit of a waste if you could use that buyout on other guys with longer contracts that may end up being long term albatrosses. Compliance buyouts can happen this upcoming offseason AND the next one, if I recall correctly.
