Big Dubas Energy

I want them all to re-sign this summer just so I don't have to spend an entire year hearing that same question every day.

I liked the confidence he spoke with.  Asked directly about signing Marner/Matthews/Nylander and he was quite confident he'll get it done.  I have a slight crush on Dubas.

I am now officially a part of the Dubas cult.  I fully expect him to get Marner to sign for a juice box and three nickles

Pretty sure Dubas will want them all signed before camp this year.  He's probably aware that he'll have to answer questions about it all year if they're not done.

Those with Big Dubas Energy care not for what questions media might ask.

Worth listening to because it addresses that question among a lot of others. I really don't want to sound too much like I'm joining the cult but it's just such a nice reminder of how engaging it is as a fan to have the guy running the team be willing to talk about his thought processes and outlook while not being indiscreet. The change from having someone who seemed to view the idea of fan engagement with disdain really is nice.

Something to point out though is that while he didn't share specific details on the Tavares presentation, he shot down the idea that they played up things like the Captaincy, off-ice earning potential or the hometown angle. Says that the pitch was almost entirely hockey related.

G-M of the Maple Leafs
First comes tanking
Then comes drafting
Then comes the part that I didn?t fully think through and I?m just leaning into it.

Hey, a guy could do a lot worse.

You picked a good one.

This is a cool observation:
With this new addition of 3 AHL contracts signed today, the Marlies have established a new record for number of AHL contracts signed in a single year (17), breaking the previous record set by Dubas' Marlies 2016-17 (16), breaking the previous record set by Dubas' Marlies 2015-16 (15).

[...]

You want to talk about finding market inefficiencies? This is where to look. The Marlies need to stock a new ECHL Growler franchise and they are doing it by hand-picking their talent for development and paying them higher than the cap limit ECHL salary. Last year, the Solar Bears were one of the youngest teams in the ECHL. I will wager that the Growlers will be the youngest - maybe ever in the history of the ECHL.

He honestly is a pleasure to listen to.  I'm looking forward to more interviews with him in the future.  I think one big thing about Kyle is that he took every opportunity to deflect his own performance and talk up the organization and the players.  I prefer his style of building team unity over "shave your beard" style tactics.

Over yonder in New York Lou isn't letting Ho Sang give interviews.

I recognize Dubas and Shanahan?s communication techniques, and they?re from the same school.

He not only deflects credit to the people he put in those roles, but he refers to them by name every time, and mentions the name of the media member asking the question in his answer fairly regularly.

Well, I think it's an entirely different concept of team "chemistry" and "culture". In Dubas' world it seems to be about looking for high character guys without thinking that "high character" means any one specific thing and then once you've got them finding a way to sort of coalesce their personalities into one cohesive whole that makes things more than the sum of their parts.

In Lamoriello's world view it seemed to be a "I've won before and this is what our team was like" thing where there was an existing template for what constituted a successful team and players either fit into their assigned molds or were seen as detrimental to the whole.

That's how I think you get bogged down in things like facial hair or which part of the jersey motivates you.

As expected, Dubas has rounded out the scouting staff with a Director of Amateur Scouting that is not an AGM. John Lilley was formerly the Director of US Scouting.

Hey everyone, on Sunday Mark Hunter can be hired by the Islanders.  At that time expect a glowing article from Steve Simmons about how the Islanders are now leagues ahead of the Leafs in terms of front office know how, and the ways to build a winner.
