Just listened the Dubas introduction on the radio. Nothing overly exciting mentioned.

The reporters kept going back to Hunter trying to get something out of Shanahan or Dubas but they did a pretty good job talking around the Hunter questions. Shanahan did acknowledge that Hunter really wanted the job and did praise Hunter a fair bit and actually corrected himself when he mentioned Hunter is past tense to present tense. So... I am guessing he's gone and the Leafs probably already know it.

Surely Hunter wouldn't leave before the draft.  would he?

If your team doesn't have its draft plan sorted out by now, you have bigger problems.

The spreadsheets run our draft now.

The Leafs are in very good hands...

...someone who has studied the effect of cognitive biases on how decisions are made. Someone who ran out a highly skilled fourth line and abandoned the use of enforcers in junior hockey, well before it was the norm. Someone who understands the way other pro sports leagues have evolved and is trying to apply those lessons to hockey, 15 years later.

I made some people mad because I was sitting in my car in a busy parking lot listening to this for the full half hour before lunch.

Brendan Shanahan: Four years ago, I remember reaching out to Kyle Dubas and not being exactly sure what I was expecting to come from that meeting, other than I wanted to talk to this young man I had heard about from some people in the Ontario Hockey League. It was probably just my attempt at the time to mine some information from someone I had heard was one of the bright young minds coming up in the game. I assumed that that meeting would be an hour or two. Nine hours later, in that meeting, I was trying to figure out a way to convince him to leave Sault Ste. Marie and come join the Toronto Maple Leafs in some capacity. To watch him over the last four years grow, to watch him work under some really esteemed people in our business ? no job was too big for Kyle, no job was too small for Kyle. To see how he interacts with our fans and the respect level he has for the Maple Leafs, for the people that love the Maple Leafs, for everyone in our office? It gives me great pride to announce Kyle as the new GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Friedman drops an interesting name as a potential hire if the Leafs need to replace Lou or Hunter in a role:

There will be plenty of applicants if the Maple Leafs need to fill an opening. One to keep an eye on: Ron Francis. He and Dubas are tight. It makes sense if Lou Lamoriello makes the expected departure, although the former Hurricanes GM might wish to take time off.

That'd be interesting actually. Francis integrated advanced stats into his management team in Carolina, hiring Eric Tulsky (a very respected member of the analytics community) to head that department. If the Leafs bring Francis in I wonder if they'd try to poach Tulsky as well.

Really excited about this.

Good news, I wasn't excited about Nonis or JFJ.

Bad news, I was excited for Burke and Lou.

Hopefully the team takes the next step...I wonder what his first big roster move will be.

Full court press against the narrative machine.

?I don?t really have any time for the argument ? one or the other,? Shanahan said of the NHL?s old school versus new school debate. ?Because I think most of the smart people I?ve met in hockey have been meeting somewhere in the middle and have a great blend and respect for both.

?I think what struck me immediately (upon meeting him in 2014) was Kyle?s easy navigation as somebody that really valued objective information but also had a great knowledge of every player in the game. He was obviously somebody, if you talked to him and looked at his background, who is a rink rat.?

Kyle Dubas is our GM  8)  ;D  8)  ;D  8)  ;D  8)  ;D  8)  ;D  8)  ;D  8)  ;D  8)  ;D  8)  ;D  8)  ;D

I hope he's as smart as people are saying. I have the same feeling this off season as I did when the Leafs won the draft lottery and we didn't know how good Matthews was but article after article told me he'd be an impact #1 center in the league.

Now all I hear about is how smart Dubas is and will use any and all advantages available to him to make the Leafs a better team. Hope he's as good a GM as Matthews was a player in his first season
