The correct answer is, "Our D is awful especially Polak. Hainsey is far to old and unskilled to play 2 straight minutes on the penalty kill in fact we are worried about him straining his neck by constantly looking up at the rafters after a goal against him which happens to be a lot. Although our defensive core is great offensively we need to strengthen our core defensively. We like some of the young D in our system but they're not ready. The defensive help we need today will have to come from external resources. I am confident I can use my super kid GM powers to pillage a minute crunching defensively responsible D man from someone for very little."

I think what happens with Polak is going to tell us a lot about who holds power in the front office. With everything Dubas has publicly said about how he wants his team and his defencemen to play, I just can't envision him wanting to bring Polak back. But you know that Babcock is going to push for it. So if he's back: Babcock's salary and experience still give him a fair amount of sway over Dubas.

That might be jumping to conclusions but I mean it's May 15th what else are we going to do?

I've been watching Carrick for 2 seasons now, and I don't think he's a very strong answer to any of our questions.

I'm not going down this road with you...if Polak is back, it's because Dubas didn't make a deal to get a better Polak.

If he can't find an upgrade on Polak, it would mean he didn't look very hard, and would be a clear sign he's in over his head as GM. There will be numerous upgrades available as free agents. They may not be big names or exciting additions, but there are a good number available.

Holl and Carrick are not the answer to our defensive woes. We need to look external. However if Holl can keep his career NHL goals per game where's it at he could help...

It was pretty clearly Dubas? job from the get go. Hunter was there to spin into a pick, but then the NHL changed that rule after we got both Babcock and Lamoriello.

I can?t find the quote, but pre-Lamoriello, Dubas said the Leafs intended to leverage their financial capabilities and Mike Babcock to develop both players and front office talent for future assets when they inevitably outgrow their roles.

Well, I do think they genuinely wanted Hunter to act as sort of a AGM - Scouting while Dubas was AGM - Marlies and Analytics. I agree that I don't think they ever really saw it as a horse race.

That said, you really can't blame Hunter if he wants to move on. If he wants to GM a NHL team someday it's understandable if he wouldn't want to stick around a place where the guy with the job has only barely started shaving.
