Activated once he got out of St. Louis, but yeah. Kinda crazy that he only won 1 Norris.

Unfortunately for him, he spent most of his career playing against a guy who might just be the best defenceman of all time.

Whoa Whoa! Aki Berg was good but he wasn't that good!

how about ol Juri Lumme?  wasnt he a peach?

In two season with Toronto, Lumme was a +13 and +10, respectively. A pretty solid piece of evidence for the argument about how bunk plus/minus is.

So the Leafs follow up the best 10 game chunk in 3 seasons with the worse chunk of this season so far.  5 outright losses, and more potential damage on the horizon....ugh

Eight now, it's looking downright dreadful.

These on the road, back to backs are killing them. I think they'll beat the Bruins on Wednesday, and maybe the Wild, but the Jets will probably take the game on Saturday.

A 4-6 record this set, if they can manage it, wouldn't be too terrible.

Carlyle needs to get them back to the way they were playing the last set. If he can't, I'm sure Shanny is itching to do something sooner rather than later.

Da Leafs baby!  Bookend wins for 2014, Jan 1st 2014 against the Wings in the winter classic and Dec 31st 2014 against the Bruins.  Forget about all the failure in between those 2 games.

What, you mean wildly outplayed, outshot and dependent on highlight reel 40+ save outings from the goaltending?

Well...that's it then , isn't it ? While i do think the Leafs have improved in some areas this season they still just try to outscore their opponent rather then defend. And when teams tighten up down the stretch and into the playoffs that just doesn't work....unless the team is the Gretzky era Oilers.

That 8-1-1 set is in the books. I don't care if Carlyle used fairy dust to get those wins. Without reopening that same old can of worms, I'd still prefer he got them to continue with their winning ways, whether they get outshot in the process or not.

The problem is a number of those wins during 8-1-1 were due to a combination of good luck. Both Bernier and Reimer giving exceptional goaltending during wins, and opposition goalies letting in way more goals then they should have on few shots against. That way of winning isn't sustainable as you'll eventually play teams with good goaltending and your goalies won't always play fantastic. The Leafs need team defense, which seems like an impossible task with this core. Something has to change or it'll be the same crap as last season with another long losing skid and no playoffs.

There is difference between this team compared from last year. I don't like team being out shot all the time, but they have been able to step it up to end losing streaks.

Last season's team only had one 4 game stretch where they didn't record a point before the collapse at the end of the season. They were equally good at ending losing streaks until they weren't. They haven't really stepped it up to end losing streaks this season. They've had their goalie step up to do it and seen the other goalie be ordinary in the same game.

That first 6 games is a tough stretch, and the way they're going I could see them finish it at 1-5.

They played those teams well. (LA, ANA,)

They capped off their 10-1-1 streak with wins against the Kings and Ducks, and subsequently lost 7 of 9.  I don't think this is the same team that played LA and ANA the first go-round, and they're not showing any real signs of changing that, either.

I mentioned back-to-backs in the GDT, but here's a visual courtesy of Gus Katsaros on Twitter:

B6xrwILIcAEKjEB.png

He says the "Game 1" column is the # of games versus a team playing Game 1 of a back-to-back set, while the "B2B to date" is the number of back-to-back sets for each team so far.
