Leafs acquire Steckel from NJ

So far, the more I see of him, the more I like. I have no idea what the Devils (and some Caps) fans were saying on HFBoards. Dude's been nothing but solid so far.

Give them six years and see how the rabies is going, Steckel was just the new guy on the block/easy mark and hurt to boot ( literally, fractured foot ...)

Not much of a skater.. but seems to do all the littel things it takes to win.sacrifices himself..

He reminds me a little of Antropov that way, looks slow but makes up for it in other (different) ways.

It looks like he will be used in situations where his skating issues are less likley to be exposed -- faceoffs and PK.

Maybe it's just adrenaline for the first couple of games, but Steckel sure is grabbing for the hearts of Leaf fans right now.

He QBs in the defensive zone.  Not only is he good at winning face-offs, but he wins them TO our team, not just winning the puck to an empty space on the ice and positionally he's really sound.

Anyone know?
We gave up a 4th rounder to get Steckel. But I thought we had already conditionally traded our 4th rounder in the lombardi trade.  If Lombardi plays X number of games  we have to throw in a 4th rounder I thought.

Yeah, I heard that last night... If Lombardi plays 40 games, we owe Nashville our 2012 4th round pick... which we already traded. I'm confused how this works now too.

IIRC both conditional picks in the Lombardi deal were for the 2013 draft - not next years. I think it had to do with the amount of games Lombardi played over this year AND next year - 60 games I believe.

Nashville was hedging on him either not playing at all this year, or very little.

It's a 2013 4th in the Lombardi trade, and, based on what I can find, CBC had some of the details wrong. It's 60 games, and, based on the way I've found it worded, that's 60 games in both 11/12 and 12/13, not total - otherwise, the Leafs get Nashville's 2013 4th.

From the Preds press release:
The deal also includes a fourth-round pick ? Nashville will acquire Toronto?s 2013 fourth rounder if Lombardi plays 60 or more games regular-season games over the course of 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, while Toronto will acquire Nashville?s 2013 fourth rounder if Lombardi does not play 60 games during the next two campaigns.

A 4th round pick is moving one way or the other depending on whether Lombardi plays 60 games in each of the next two seasons is how I interpret their language.

to me it sounds more like a total of 60 games between 2 seasons.  I read 'over the course' to mean 60 games over the span of 2 campaigns.

Same here, either way, I hope we give them the pick.

Yeah, from that, is sounds like 60 total, but, from other sources, it sounded like 60 in each. I imagine the official press release from the Preds is the more accurate source, though.

Imagine the sense of value Burke would feel if he paid $7 mil to a player for playing 61 of 164 games and then, to top it off, had to send the Preds a 4th rounder for that pleasure - a fairly high priced talent missing more than 100 NHL games.

It doesn't sound very reasonable because Burke would not have got very much for his money. I realize Franson is a part of the deal but the line distinguishing between the Leafs giving up a 4th rounder or the Preds giving one to the Leafs  looks pretty low to me.

If Burke got two 60+ game seasons out of Lombardi, then it makes much more sense to me that the Preds would be deserving of additional compensation because the Leafs really got something - a heck of a lot more (double) the two 30 game seasons for their money.

Think about it.

Steckel has been a nice addition 3 games in. Between him and Bozak the faceoff circle is a Leaf strong point right now. When was the last time we could say that? Peter Zezel?
