Leafs acquire Steckel from NJ

Since Wilson says he can play the wing too, maybe he takes the draw and then plays the wing on the 4th line?

Dupuis seems to like to hit more than Steckel does, I think I'd rather have him on the wing.

Steckel immediately improves our PK. Size is a huge bonus. Faceoffs are going to help bigtime in all areas. Can also help on the wing!

Zigomanis must be thinking "What do I have to do to catch a break around here?"

So , are the rumour mongers right? Does Burke have his Trader Vic hat on and some more excitement is coming??

Yes, no and maybe. I doubt this trade is a sign of anything to come or connected to any other potential deals. It was an opportunity to fill a need for cheap. Plain and simple.

Didn't management, Burke, Poulin or Nonis mention late in the summer, that they may make a move a little later for a 4th line player? I kind of remember something about that.

So...Dupuis's done?  Or Bozak?

I'd imagine a full team will look something like this:

Lupul-Connolly-Kessel
Kulemin-Grabovski-MacArthur
Lombardi-Bozak-Armstrong
Dupuis-Steckel-Brown
Orr

Frattin and Rosehill stay up while Connolly and MacArthur are out of the line-up.

I'm with Carlton on the lines here. That sounds about right and looks good to me. Maybe the Leafs as a whole felt that what Boyce, Crabb and or Zigomanis brought, didn't bring enough to the table and they decided to go in a totally different route. On paper, Steckel is exactly what this team needs right now, size, face-off ability and PK minutes.

I also agree with Carlton that he was looking very good when he was with Washington before he left, even better than Fleischman at that time, if I remember correctly. He earned his contract before they signed the latter, right? Personally, I believe a few of us were wondering then if we could potentially work out a trade for him, because depth was pushing him out of Washington at the time. Then they signed him to his deal.

So Kadri, Frattin and Rosehill back to the Marlies when everybody is healthy? The Marlies are going to be very strong this season!

Good at winning face-offs, but thats about it. It seems like this is just a deal to set up another one of more significance IMO.

Like what....Dupuis for a 3rd rounder?

Seriously though. How does this set up a bigger trade? It's a 4th liner for a 4th round pick.

Well like say for instance the Leafs trade 2 players for someone like Turris (or anyone half decent and available) and we have Steckel to fill the resulting open spot on our own roster. I'm not suggesting Steckel as the bait, but rather to help set up a 2 for 1 deal down the road.

The type of player the Leafs have been trying to find for awhile now. If he helps improve the PK then he will be more than worth it.

I guess the only question is, is he really better than Blair Betts who could have been had for free? I'm asking honestly, having not paid too close attention to either player last year.

I don't mind this deal.  I mentioned this guy on the old site for this role.

I'm not intimately familiar with his skills because I didn't see tons of Caps games but he's intrigued me in the past while following the Caps. He's a former late 1st rounder. He's not a great skater but with guys like Brown & Dupuis (& maybe Lombardi to start the season on the 4th line), he'll have ample speed on his wings. He's had some/a good offensive seasons in the AHL but he's not a scorer. And in spite of his size, he's not a fighter.

But he hits/finishes his checks, plays good defence, good PKer, is tough in puck battles with his size and he's one of the best faceoff centers in the game today.

I liked him when he played for the Caps in this role. In my opinion, he's definitely an upgrade for this roster in that role and helps to shore up a group of centers not that hot on the draw. With he and Bozak centering the 3rd & 4th lines, those guys are going to start out with the puck more than they used to.

I think he's a good pickup and will help. A 4th rounder to get him won't break the prospect bank.

I can't pretend to know a ton about him but the numbers look good. I wonder a little bit about his purchase price/availability but I suppose if the financial stories about the Devils are true this may be a spot where they were looking to reduce their payroll a little.

It seems as though consensus is that he squeezes Frattin out of the lineup for now? That's interesting as people seemed pretty high on him but obviously Frattin's a guy who could probably get some more seasoning as well.

From a NJ beat reporter:

TGfireandice Tom Gulitti
Lamoriello on trade:"It certainly frees up a roster spot for a combination of us looking into seeing what we can do with Petr Sykora.."
...

Lamoriello cont: "...also the young players Henrique and Tedenby and Brad Mills, Cam Janssen, I think they?ve warranted being on the roster"

I think Frattin was gone once MacArthur's suspension was dealt with and Connolly is good to go (assuming no other injuries). Acquiring Steckel maybe moves that process up a week.

I guess. I'd thought the general thought was that Frattin would be on the third line with Bozak and Armstrong and he'd basically be dogging it out with Lombardi for time.

Seems a little weird that there won't be any high profile rookies on the club but I guess that's maybe par for the course when jobs are on the line.

That's kind of what I mean though. Steckel's a 4th line guy so I don't know if he's really going to get squeezed out by high profile rookies. Along those lines, I'm not sure what it says for him if he's squeezed out by a guy like Janssen.

It's why the money thing looks pretty likely to me. 1.1 per is a lot to pay a 4th line guy if you have money issues and cheaper options.

Well, there's Gardiner.

True enough. I was just thinking forwards.
