Leafs Announce Training Camp Roster

Maybe this has something to do with them not having the conditioning that some of the other players have, or something....I don't know, really, but I can't believe that Leivo would be sent back before a Richard f'ing Clune.

But again, you're assuming that this is strictly a reflection of an organizational depth chart. Because to me it seems pretty clear that the guys who are with the team still fall into one of three categories:

1. Guys who'll definitely make the Leafs
2. The Leafs top prospects
3. Guys who are in the running to be the Leafs' 13th or 14th forward

Leivo doesn't fit into any of those categories because, I'm sure we agree, we'd all rather him be on the Marlies than in the press box most nights. Guys like Clune and Froese and the PTO's are a different story.

You're probably right, but a guy going into his 3rd year with the Marlies is starting to lose his propectness.

You could look at when guys like Nyquist and Tatar were sent back in Red Wings camps to see if they view him as a guy that needs more seasoning at the farm level.  If the Red Wings were quick to demote those types of players during the Babcock era, then it stands to reason that the Leafs are just following the same pattern with a guy like Leivo.

In terms of ever being a really significant contributor to a NHL team? Sure, to some extent. But I'd still rather hav him playing every night even if he only ever tops out as a 4th liner/1st call-up kind of guy.

Does anyone think Holland is ready for no.2 centre role? Or is he just not quite good enough? He'll never be a top-tier no.2, but I'm optimistic he can grow into the role. He'll be supplanted soon enough by Nylander of course.

I was really optimistic about him prior to the start of last season, I really thought he would take the next step forward. But that didn't happen. Granted, nobody looked that good last season and his primarily linemates were Clarkson and Komarov. But still my optimism for him has decreased slightly.

You should have added "Tyler Bozak:  Nice hair though"

Just based on his play last year, and him being 24 now, I think he tops out where he's at on the 3rd-4th line centre.  I'm not seeing those flashes of great play that make me think he's going to be something he isn't already.

At this point, there's no way the Leafs should have him penciled into the future top 2 centre spots, especially given that they seem to be leaning toward Marner and Nylander at C.

I thought Holland played quite well against the Habs, he was really working hard, does he slot in as our 2nd line centre this year, depends what happens with Bozak. Nylander won't be with the Leafs (at least it looks this way) and then Holland will have a year working #3, of if injuries to others #2.

Holland is still a good option and he brings both size and above average speed to the table. His capabilities are better utilized when he has skill on his wings, instead of the possession black hole that was Clarkson. If Kadri/Bozak(pleasepleaseplease) gets moved at the deadline this year, Holland's likely the one filling that gaping void until the next season. I see him as a 3C who can play a 2nd line role when necessary.

I think Holland flies under the radar a lot. I like him. He's young and still showing signs he's got room to run.

I think Holland could shake out as a really solid 3rd line center going forward. Given his age, he may have a long-term future in that position. Ultimately, I suppose it comes down to what Babcock sees him in, and how well he can adapt to what the coach wants.

In today's league 24 isn't young if you're a player who hasn't really established himself.  With speed at a premium I'd say most nhlers are looking at careers that run from say 22 to 32 ish.

Siegel only named 3 players. Rob Madore (G) has been assigned to the Marlies camp.

Surprised Clune and Froese are still up.

They released Fraser too he's just not made it out of the Leafs zone yet.

But more accurately they haven't released him.

Maybe it's just me getting old but I would have cut him the second he got into a meaningless fight that negated a Leafs scoring chance in the 1st period.  I'm fine with the odd fight that has meaning.  A useless fight in a preseason game was nothing more than an absolutely selfish play.  If Kadri decided that he wasn't going to pass anymore and just tried to skate through guys, Babcock would bench him for being a dummy.  Fraser doing it as a guy on a PTO...I know he's trying to show that he can be tough but it was just a stupid play.
