Leafs claim Frank Corrado, waive Panik

Interesting. There was a lot of talk online about the Canucks being foolish in waiving Corrado. Seems like a good pick-up, although I'm disappointed as this likely means Harrington has to go back down.

Corrado is a right handed shot on the back end. Easy decision here. Could turn into a long-term partner for either Reilly or Gardiner as he's a smart, speedy, steady, defensive defenseman.

I liked Panik, but it was pretty clear he was going to get any ice-time with the Leafs this season. Hopefully he squeezes through waivers and can add to an already insane group of forwards there, but if not no harm done.

I thought the Leafs were not going to Panik, what does Corrado bring to the table?

Good skater, has really good possession numbers in his limited time on the ice with Vancouver.  Right handed defenseman too.  He's 22 so definitely still well within the "he can still get a lot better" phase of his career.  He's a better fit on the roster than Harrington in terms of being a good mobile player but he's not an offensive skater like Gardiner or Rielly.  Think of him more like a really raw version of what Anton Stralman turned into.

Here's a Canucks blogs profile on Corrado from their top-20 prospects series:

http://canucksarmy.com/2015/8/28/canucksarmy-prospect-profile-6-frank-corrado

Corrado was ranked the Canucks 6th best prospect by Canucks Army, where Jeff Veillette described him as below:

Corrado isn't likely to have top pairing upside, but he's the type of guy that you look forward to having in an NHL rotation. The mental side of his game is very strong, in the sense that he has a lot of patience with the puck and can shake off a mistake without it throwing off his game afterward. He also possesses the speed to often mend those mistakes in a timely fashion, which also allows him to be a viable option to carry the puck into the offensive zone if necessary.

Although I think it should probably be said that him ranking as the Canucks' 6th best prospect is really just a testament to just how awful the Canucks' system is.

Still, local guy with upside. Why not? I'd ideally like to see Phaneuf and Polak moved sooner rather than later just so all of these young defensemen with upside can actually, you know, play but seems like an ok addition.

My guess:

Gardiner - Phaneuf
Hunwick - Rielly
Marincin - Corrado
Polak
Robidas (IR)

Harrington likely to the Marlies now for Top-4 minutes.

If the plan was to send Harrington to the Marlies, they probably wouldn't have waived Panik. There would have been no need to.

Just so we're clear though, Polak is the guy they A-1 will be showcasing for a deadline trade. He's not going to the press box.

Per Siegel, practice pairings today:
Hunwick-Phaneuf. Gardiner-Harrington. Marincin-Rielly

Oh yeah. Good point. 8D it is.

I agree with that, but I think the first few games will be more Harrington (since he's not being sent down) and Marincin than Polak, who had a poor showing at camp. We can hold him in the pressbox until someone gets desperate enough for depth (Boston?); I'm not expecting anything higher than a 3rd for him.

I'd be a little disappointed to lose Panik, but this sounds like a decent swap in terms of value, even if they are very deep in terms of depth D guys on the back end.

I wonder if we might see one or more of the Swedes head back to the SEL, I don't see them getting much chance here.
