Harrington likely to the Marlies now for Top-4 minutes.

If the plan was to send Harrington to the Marlies, they probably wouldn't have waived Panik. There would have been no need to.

I thought he was sent down today?

As of the time busta wrote that, Harrington was still with the Leafs. Might just be a temporary paper transaction to clear Robidas to IR.

Ah, right.

It's actually until Panik's waiver status is resolved. He's still on the roster until noon tomorrow, and the Leafs need to be down to 23 players by 5 pm today.

Cool.

Francesco "Frankie" Corrado is back just in time to take in the Jays' playoff run.

So here's a question that's been bouncing around my mind the last little while. What do people think of Nick Spaling? Do people think he's really got some value? Or do people think that his contract makes him hard to trade? Because it seems like he's someone who's stuck around over other players who are just as if not more likely to be valuable deadline day pieces.

It's not saying much but I thought that he showed a lot of hustle in my limited viewings of him during preseason. It looks like Babcock might be using him and Winnik as a sorta-shutdown to start the season. So he probably stuck around over some other guys because of his value in that type of role.

I think he's ok, nothing more. Realistically he'd return what? a 3rd in a career year?

Out of curiosity, who would've been a more valuable deadline piece in your mind (I can't think of anyone on the preseason roster)?

Richard Panik waived? Okay, this is a great opportunity to make a clever pun, don't mess it up Andy...

Clearly, the Leafs Richarded!    Dammit!

I feel like the fact that most of those pieces are still out there as UFAs speaks to how their value might be lower than we think. I don't think anyone the Leafs have under contract that didn't make the roster and is likely trade bait at the deadline has any more trade value than Spaling could.

Spaling is the kind of depth centre a lot of teams look for at the deadline. He won't have huge value, but the Leafs didn't lose anything keeping him over anyone else.

To be clear, there's nobody I think the Leafs passed on who definitely would be a more valuable piece come the deadline. I guess to explain the way I look at it right now I think there are three groups of players among the forwards:

Players that are almost certainly going to be in the top 6 and receive PP time: Kadri, Lupul, JVR, Bozak

Players that probably won't be in the top 6 and receive PP time: Komarov, Arcobello, Spaling, Holland

Players that very could well be in the running for the open top 6 spots: Winnik(I guess), Parenteau, Grabner, Boyes, Matthias

Now, there are players in the second group who are more valuable than the ones in the third but where the Leafs are kind of unique, I think, and what sort of goes to what Busta said about these guys still being available is that for just around every other team in the league a player like a Setoguchi or Glencross is almost certainly being evaluated on a "Can he be a valuable piece on our bottom 6" basis and because they're not that kind of player, they're rightfully still without a contract.

Like I said, the Leafs are a bit unique in that they might very well have given those guys a chance to wing one of the top two lines and maybe score a few goals. It's not likely that they'd do much with the opportunity, no, but nobody in that third group of forwards is likely to have a good year. Who knows. Maybe Glencross might have rediscovered something and had a superficially good year. It still probably wouldn't have meant much but when compared to someone who figures to be a 4th liner regardless?

Anyways, not really a criticism, just idle wondering.

We should find out about Panik in about 35 minutes, what's the consensus?

Clear or Claimed?

I'm gonna say clear. Largely because most teams will already have their rosters set. The Canucks were able to sneak Linden Vey through waivers yesterday and he's probably a better player.

Who knows though, all it takes is one team. But I'm guessing clear.

Yeah, I'd probably agree.

The only thing that I was wondering was, apparently Tampa were more than a little sour about losing him originally so if they can, perhaps they put in a claim.
