I fear this game. While I normally don't listen to Don Cherry, he had a point about the schedule with the Leafs playing back to back and Flyers just practicing since Friday

Time to find out what all the fuss was about with Bernier. Hopefully the kid is up for another challenge this year.

If Rielly slots in tonight, I expect Carlyle to give him plenty of minutes to prove he belongs.

For me, while Gardiner didn't play well last night, I think the guy that has to come out is Ranger. He looked like he was still playing at the AHL level. He seemed a bit lost to me.

I agree. Gardiner was able to skate and pass out of the zone reasonably well where Ranger just looked scattered and overmatched.

Plus wasn't there a lot of talk in preseason about "easing" Ranger back into the NHL pace?  So regardless of how well Ranger played, it would fit that plan to rest him tonight.

Also Ranger got a lot of minutes yesterday, maybe in part because Carlyle was already planning to rest him today.

I'd give Gardiner a chance to settle down.  Put him on the 3rd pair if you must to let him catch his breath, psychologically.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about Gardiner bouncing back, or totally playing an awesome game tonight. Whether it's a systems thing or the increased speed of the NHL game, but Ranger looked a bit behind the curve. It did seem like he was on every other shift.

Gardiner is an enigma.  The player we saw in the Boston series looked dominant and had shades of Karlsson in him, last night he looked lost at times.

True, but when he messes up, he has a habit of getting back and making up for it. He is rather hyper though I think, maybe just his age? He cost the Leafs a goal last night, but he didn't look as lost to me as did Ranger. So in regards to the change, it has to be Ranger for me.

I think there should be a rule against being the visiting team in more than one teams home opener.

The schedule makers have enough issues without this.

I thought Ranger looked more out of sorts, too.  And Gardiner has a history of rough starts/restarts.  I'm confident he'll come to his senses quickly, if he's given a chance.  I believe in this guy.

Personally this goon show is starting to really piss me off. Last night was a disgrace and only by some good luck that Parros was not injured worse or crippled. I don't mind the testoterone and truculence, but come on...do you really want you kids watching a thug fest..If it keeps up at this level I am going to tune out. Thats not hockey.
I hope some others of you feel the same way.

Yeah it's starting to become a parody of itself.  There was nothing to be gained having goons out there who just fight.  The initial fight with Ashton Carter was a spontaneous thing that happened, but Parros/Orr round 2 was just unnecessary.  A small scrum between Orr and PK and there has to be a fight out of it.  There's no point in having goons on the team who can only play 4 minutes a game.

Well it was his first NHL game in close to 4 years - it's probably to be expected.  There's only so much you can do to replicate the actual pace of an NHL game, especially the pace of a home opener in Montreal.  It's probably wise to ease him in a bit.

Given that he hasn't played in the NHL in a while, I question the Gardiner/Ranger pairing.  Better to have both of them paired with someone else you can depend on right out the gate.  I think that pairing is mistake prone right now, and they're not helping each other.
