We're the fights because of the Leafs 'goon squad' last night?  I thought we were mostly standing up for ourselves and the Habs initiated alot if it.
maybe it's my leaf bias..but i kind of just felt this was more about montreal trying to make a statement that they were tougher now..especially on home ice ....but who knows what really goes on at ice level ..guess we'll see over the season if we're just going around trying to beat everyone up or if there are just certain teams that we seem to get into it with

Not that the Leafs shy away from fights but I agree that Montreal was trying to make a statement. Orr didn't engage Parros the first time he looked for a fight, but did later when Parros was roughing up a Leaf. Then Subban grabbed Orr in a headlock until Parros arrived to scrap on the second fight.

Well from that standpoint I'm glad we did what we did instead of getting pushed around.  But yes in general, there was too much fighting and made the game too long.

Yeah Subban instigated that 2nd one for sure. he tried to rough up Orr, knowing full well that Parros was going to jump in.

Now Mr. PK isn't going to have his heavyweight security guard on the ice the next time he's on with Orr.  Whupsie!!

Bernier vs. Steve Mason tonight in goal. Rielly, Clarkson, and Reimer were the only Leafs who participated in the morning skate today, so expect the same line-up other than Bernier in goal.

Why are they not playing Rielly? Either play him or send him back!

Part of the maturation of becoming a pro is just being around the players, practicing with them, and soaking it all up. My guess is that they're going to space out his nine games and keep him around of a few months to acclimatize himself to the atmosphere. I'm guessing his first game will be as insulated as possible. It might not be until next week in Nashville.

I've brought this example up a few times now, but when Pietrangelo was Rielly's age the Blues only played him in 9 games throughout October and November before loaning him to the WJC team and sending him back to the OHL after that. If they don't plan on keeping Rielly with the team for the full season, I like this plan. If they do plan on keeping him though and he only plays say 30 games, well then yeah I'm with ya.

Carlyle also employed the D weirdly, considering their respective strengths:

@mirtle

Was only one game but some weird stuff from Leafs in those numbers. Gardiner didn't start in o-zone once last night. Fraser did 80% of time.

He was also constantly juggling the pairings and having them switch sides. Every defenceman played with 2 or 3 different partners throughout the game.

And this was before Fraser decided to take a 9 minute break.

Could that not be a result of a poorly played game by the defense?

Here's a question that I don't really know the answer to.

Does the defense coach make most of the decisions for the on the fly changes of the 'D' or is Carlyle whispering in their ears as the play goes on?

Personally this goon show is starting to really piss me off. Last night was a disgrace and only by some good luck that Parros was not injured worse or crippled. I don't mind the testoterone and truculence, but come on...do you really want you kids watching a thug fest..If it keeps up at this level I am going to tune out. Thats not hockey.
I hope some others of you feel the same way.
The only reason I saw Parros get hurt was improper equipment.  Someone could of thrown a penny on the ice and he could of smashed his face into the ice.  Hockey equipment isn't good enough.

Wouldn't it be face masks in this case?

All I can say is that our division is more the fisticuff of all and each team is trying keep up with the Jones by adding muscle .So with Detroit being added in the Atlantic division , it may help turn the tide for the goon mentality and get back to progressive hockey

Or Detroit will be beat up.  Its going to make a good case study to see how it plays out.

I expect this game to be tough, the Flyers will be coming out for a win.  Looking at their lineup, they have plenty of guys to cause 'mayhem'.  Leafs need to be ready and play just as well as they did against the Habs.

Bring it on!  GO LEAFS GO!!
