Personally this goon show is starting to really piss me off. Last night was a disgrace and only by some good luck that Parros was not injured worse or crippled. I don't mind the testoterone and truculence, but come on...do you really want you kids watching a thug fest..If it keeps up at this level I am going to tune out. Thats not hockey.
I hope some others of you feel the same way.

I agree. Guys get knocked out on the ice doesn't give a team a boost. It doesn't pump up the crowd. It doesn't help the game at all. It sucks the life out of the building. The atmosphere after Parros hit the ice was almost like they were playing in an empty arena. Having a tough, physical team can be an asset, but being able to fight doesn't make your team tough or physical in a way that wins games.

Also, if Fraser can not leave the team down a defencemen for 1/4 of the game again, that would be great.

Flyers have Hal Gill now, I'd really like to see a Schenn / Gill pairing to see just how slow they could be together.

I still can't get over the fact that Burke was able to pull off the Van Riemsdyk for Schenn trade. I believe that was his finest moment as Leaf GM.

Really? This is the same team who let Bobrovsky go for basically nothing (and watched as he subsequently won the Vezina the next year) and are using Steve Mason to start their home opener with Ray Emery as the back-up?
Finest moment? You're giving Paul Holmgren too much credit

This trade and the Lupul/Gardiner trade stand out.  Kessel wasn't too bad too, despite all the baggage of the draft picks, Kessel is turning out to be an elite player.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about Gardiner bouncing back, or totally playing an awesome game tonight. Whether it's a systems thing or the increased speed of the NHL game, but Ranger looked a bit behind the curve. It did seem like he was on every other shift.

Gardiner is an enigma.  The player we saw in the Boston series looked dominant and had shades of Karlsson in him, last night he looked lost at times.

Maybe it was just an off night?

To me, tonight is all about Bernier.  I didn't get to see him really at all in the pre.

What really bugs me about it is how many advocates of fighting believe it equals toughness.  A team can be considered "tough" even if they don't fight.

I don't care to see these relative no names become the main topic and focal point of a game.

Exactly what I was thinking.  It just seemed like one of those games for him.

If he continues to play like that, then I'll be concerned.

Any word on lineup decisions?  I'm concerned Carlyle might sit out Gardiner with one bad game.  Better to let him get in a groove and hopefully rebound tonight with a much better game.

Carlyle also employed the D weirdly, considering their respective strengths:

@mirtle

Was only one game but some weird stuff from Leafs in those numbers. Gardiner didn't start in o-zone once last night. Fraser did 80% of time.

So, the Flyers would have taken the highest bid for JVR, and Schenn was that? Not sure I'm getting your point. It wasn't a smart move for Burke because Holmgren is a dummy?

We're the fights because of the Leafs 'goon squad' last night?  I thought we were mostly standing up for ourselves and the Habs initiated alot if it.

He was also constantly juggling the pairings and having them switch sides. Every defenceman played with 2 or 3 different partners throughout the game.

And this was before Fraser decided to take a 9 minute break.

Bernier vs. Steve Mason tonight in goal. Rielly, Clarkson, and Reimer were the only Leafs who participated in the morning skate today, so expect the same line-up other than Bernier in goal.

I hope Gardiner plays with Fraser or Franson tonight. Fraser's probably a better fit. Anyone remember who he played with in the playoffs last year?

maybe it's my leaf bias..but i kind of just felt this was more about montreal trying to make a statement that they were tougher now..especially on home ice ....but who knows what really goes on at ice level ..guess we'll see over the season if we're just going around trying to beat everyone up or if there are just certain teams that we seem to get into it with

Lets hope that is the case as the pre-season was quite bust up as well. I was particular concerned with Frazer whom I believe had his last fight after the Parros incident. I thought that was in very bad form. Thank god Parros is out of hospital and appears to be alright.

Not that the Leafs shy away from fights but I agree that Montreal was trying to make a statement. Orr didn't engage Parros the first time he looked for a fight, but did later when Parros was roughing up a Leaf. Then Subban grabbed Orr in a headlock until Parros arrived to scrap on the second fight.

I missed the first fight, but I saw it a little different in terms of how the 2nd fight germinated. I saw Parros trying to keep Subban at bay. In other words, Subban antagonized Orr then of course Parros had to defend him.
